So my 7970 is arriving tomorrow and one thing that I had forgotten about is PhysX. Obviously that only works with Nvidia cards, but I was just learning how games like Borderlands 2 offload it to the CPU.

Is that a big load on the CPU (granted I know it depends on what proc you are running). I do have to upgrade my CPU/Mobo next (running Phenom II Black X4 at 3.4).

What are your thoughts on it? Can you install an older Nvidia card as a dedicated PhysX? Is it worth the hassle?

overclock this more for the time being. Mine is at 4.2. 3.8 is reachable at stock voltage on most.

Is it better to manually do it in bios or use the AMD overdrive software?

Sounds good. I will do that.

If I wanted to use the PhysX option in games(not even sure how many games use this) will that CPU overclocked with 8gig Ram with my 9790 be sufficient? I had been looking to wait for the next line from Intel to come out before purchasing.

I have read that it is possible to get a cheap nvidia card for just physx but you have to use 3rd party drivers for it to work.

In the end, is it worth the hassle?

If it is offloaded to the CPU will it be that big of an impact?

Never done it but I hear it takes a major hit. Not that many games use physx and not everyone even cares. Your call

Well I don't see playing Borderlands at 1440 with PhysX on high anytime soon.

the only game so far that i have liked noticed physx on is BL2. To me physx is not worth the hassle of have a separate card to run it. I can't tell you how much of a toll physx takes on your cpu but i would imagine it would not be much as most games don't push your cpu nearly as much as the gpu.

I would advise you to OC your cpu, not just for physx but for general performance increases. If you really aren't comfortable putting a lot of strain on the cpu you could try the let it handle physx at stock and see how it performs. If you're just waiting for the next intel line though I would think you would want to OC though. I'm not the guy to ask about amd OCing, but it is always better to do it though bios.

i use an unlocked athlon II which reads as a phenom II x4 b50. won't overclock worth a damn.

what board do you have? phenoms pull a lot of juice so OCing can be pretty tricky to keep your temps down.

Mine is a Phenom II X2 that I unlocked the extra cores for as well. It also shows up as a b50.
