Beast, Feilhaber is probably our most creative mid fielder in terms of passing at the moment.

The Bradley-Feilhaber midfield pairing circa 2007 was actually one of the more successful ones I can remember. Then Benny left Hamburg, where he was being groomed to succeed Van der Vaart, to sign for the worst team in EPL history. His club career then detioriorated to the point where he was no longer an option for the usmnt. He's also had trouble getting along with others throughout his career.

Eta: Bradley was a different player at the time though. He was very reckless and rarely made it through a match without picking up a yellow.

I'm probably the only person not related to Benny that owns a Benny Feilhaber Derby County jersey.

Locking that away for a trivia question.

Probably a safe bet

This is what ended his European career

Why do you even know that exists?

How would people laugh at it otherwise?

I think Benny makes sense as a late game, offensive minded sub.

Beast, how you would play that 4 man midfield? I'm not convinced that Dempsey would be very good on the wing.

Maybe a diamond midfield with Bradley and Holden wide (though tucked in) with Jones behind them?

Not sure if Jones has the discipline to do that, but Bradley and Holden can both play well in the role I described. Bradley did very well there against Slovenia, but that seems like a long time ago.

He's fine out there. That's where he played most of his US career.

He just doesn't *like* it.

It's not like he stays out there anyway. He's there as an outlet, and he ghosts in. That's where he's most effective, IMO. I'm not a big fan of his, especially for us, centrally.

You stick him out there. He has a ton of space. He can sit on the ball forever and determine his plan of action. He's a brilliant player who deserves a ton of latitude, and I think that's the easiest way for the USMNT to give it to him.

--------------Altidore---------
---Dempsey-----------LD---
---Holden----Bradley---JJ/Kljestan
Johnson---Omar---Cameron---Dolo/Chandler
------------------Howard/Guzan---------

That would be my first choice if everyone is healthy. If we expect to be able to assert some control on the game, I'd play Dolo and Kljestan. If the plan is to mostly stay behind the ball and counter I'd switch to Chandler and JJ. Dempsey is fully capable of playing on the left hand side and coming in, after all that's where he's spent most of his time in England. Obviously he's not going to play as a traditional winger but we would rely on Johnson covering a lot of ground up and down the left side.

Hmm... I do too. Dempsey was great out on the left for Fulham. I just worry about him playing as a winger in a 4-4-2 because he doesn't do a lot of defensive work.

What I had in mind is more of a 4321 or a 433. I agree defensively he might be a bit of a liability, but he would be less of one in that shape than in a 442.

re: Michael Bradley completed 98.2% of his passes tonight

I always thought Dempsey was most effective as that inverted winger/auxiliary 10/shadow striker role he played for Fulham his last year there. He just doesn't release the ball when he should, ala the French playmakers, though in the box I think he's our best weapon. Is he truly a good enough passer for the free role? I'm inclined to say no, though I would be happy to be wrong.

Dempsey has been one of my favorite American players ever, but I'm inclined to agree with you. I do think he sees that as his natural position though.

Is he starting every game at Roma? Haven't been keeping up this year.

No, he's not starting all that often however he's still getting minutes. He's a bit unfortunate that the new manager Andreazzoli prefers a 3-4-1-2 formation so that's one less MF position where he could play.

Andreazzoli has moved Pjanic back to a deep lying playmaker position with De Rossi at holding mid flanked by 2 wingbacks. Michael has only started when one of those two weren't available or has come on for Pjanic to shore up the defense with a lead recently.

Concerning the comments about him being world class: it depends on what one means by world class:
He's not world class in terms of being one of the top 20 at his position but he is an integral part of a club that's among the top 20 most talented in the world and that's not too shabby.
