Also, Sheep, I'm pretty sure we played a 4-2-3-1 and not a 4-4-2 empty bucket.

It was pretty close to it at times.

Dempsey was ok. The cut back attempt in the box was definitely a head scratcher, and I think he could have done more in pushing forward, but that wasn't the plan.

Gomez and Zusi played as long as they did because of what they offer defensively, which is great hustle and a bit of dirty work.

Not sure why Jozy got taken out. I still want to see Jozy and EJ play up top together.

Jozy and EJ or Jozy/Boyd, I wanna see one of those happen.

I thought we were in a 4-2-3-1

Thankfully, he had one more play in which he came from no where and disrupted a wide open cross that went out for a corner

Yeah, I nearly had a heart attack. He really was busting it to get in position on that play.

In regard to Dempsey, I wasn't saying he gave up. He just didn't offer much to the game. If he didn't have anything in the tank, he needs to let the coach know that. His 75% isn't better than his backup's 100%.

That may have been what the lineup sheet said, but Gomez and Zusi ran the sidelines, Edu and Bradley sat deep in the middle and Clint stayed up top with Jozy for most of the game.

By the end, we were playing the old Guatemala 1-9-1.

Honestly man, I think Jurgy knew Clint was gassed but he was going to leave him in no matter, it's just how it was, I'm not saying it was wrong, I woulda done the same thing. Our loss at Jamaica was another time Jurgy played Deuce for 90 mins when he was gassed and coming back from injury as well, I think JK just really values that Clint is one of our few "elite" level players that has to be out there

Clint stayed up top

Clint spent a lot of time behind the ball, and frequently came back as an outlet whenever we got possession.

He was not a forward.

Our defensive shape was certainly the empty bucket for most of the game. Offensively, it was frustrating to see Dempsey try to pick up the ball 40 yards from goal, 20 yards from the striker, with three Mexican players in front of him. I've never thought of him as a playmaker, more of a shadow striker who specializes in late runs into the box.

This.

If anything our defensive shape was empty bucket or 4-4-1-1. Jozy stayed a bit higher than Clint for the most part.

seriously though, he's a world class midfielder

Depends upon what you define as ´world class´.

I´ve always loved him, well, his potential for great progression, but I still don´t think he´s there yet.

It´s certainly well within his grasp, however.

He certainly isn't. Which is why he shouldn't be played at AM for 90 minutes a match. People wonder why Altidore doesn't score goals - he has no service. Dempsey is only decent in link-up play. He's a great player in and around the box, and an average one when he isn't. He isn't particularly good at shooting from distance, and he has never been one to pick out a pass.

I think this midfield would be dynamic and would create chances for Altidore:

Dempsey, Holden, Bradley, Edu/Beckerman

Assuming Holden on the outside?

I really don't know what JK would do, nor what he should do. It's been so long since I've seen Holden play, and who knows what kind of player he becomes after his injury.

I do know he was fantastic through the center for Bolton. It's where he had a tremendous amount of success. I referenced the single match he played with Wilshere in 2009 or 2010 earlier in the thread, and I would love to see a similar partnership formed with Bradley.

I agree 100% on your analysis of Dempsey. Definitely doesn't strike me as a true number 10 that could carry an otherwise unimpressive midfield from an attacking standpoint. He can finish on chances and has good intangibles but he won't beat guys off the dribble and create. He needs great guys around him in order to thrive.
