SBL 2013 Post-Draft Rankings
Posted on 3/25/13 at 7:53 pm
Posted on 3/25/13 at 7:53 pm
This year, Im busting out the new "love/hate" segment for the rankings. Here is the top 7 teams, the next grouping will be up shortly.
1 Gyno
Love: His balance on offense. He has a cluster of big power guys(Bats, E5, Beltre) & also has a few other big power potential guys (Viciedo, Carter). Mixed in are so good speed guys like Gardener, Kipnis & Aybar. Overall, one of the best balanced offensive teams in the SBL.
On the mound features 2 frontline guys, with several up and coming studs. Love the potential of guys like Smardzja, Teharen, Miller, & Rondon.
Hate: Gyno came out of the draft with no legit closer. He has several "closers in waiting" but at this point, that is his weak spot. And for as much potential that his starters have, it could go sour if 1 or 2 don't pan out. To nitpick further, i thought the end of his draft really sucked, which shows when you look at his bench. Does he have any impact guys there?
2 Rondo
Love: Rondo owned the draft with his multitude of draft picks. While I don't think the totally capitalized on his position, you can't deny that he landed a ton of impact bats. I caught Gyno fapping the other day, and I look on the screen & he was reading Willingham, Davis, and Bowdro Alvarez's bios. I said WTF, Gyne? But I had to agree. These guys could bring Ron a combined 90 HRs
He was also able to land "glue" guys like Prado & Doumit.
On the mound, he came out with what I thought was the best overall player in the draft, Jordan Zim. To add to his 2 studs, Verlander & Latos. I liked the Beckett pick, he was really good in LA last year. I think right there, along with Ian Kennedy, he should be 5 deep on the mound. He was also able to land 3 closers.
Hate: You have to wonder about a few of his players. Chris Davis & Bowdro? Do they take a step forward, or do they dwindle like they have been prone to do? Will Panda, Morneau, & Tulo stay healthy for him? What Rickie Weeks is going to show up? Obviously there are a ton of questions here. But what he does hold is a lot of former All stars who are capable of huge years. Keep an eye on this situation.
3 Goodfellas
Love: First I want to give Earl props for helping the slow draft move along. Let's get to his team: As I posted in the post-keeper deadline rankings, IMO, Earl possesses 4, yes 4, of the top 10 hitters in fantasy baseball; Miggy, Votto, Stanton, Matt Kemp. This will be a hard offense to beat weekly. I like Howie Kendrick in the LAA offense this year, & I think Carlos Santana finally has to take the next step.
On the mound he's young, but talented. Matt Moore & Matt Harvey are 2 of the top young arms in their respective league. Alexi Ogando is one of my favs, he is so underrated. And if he gets the 2012 Jake Peavy, he should have a nice staff.
Hate: As good of his hitters are, I don't really like his bench(just 2 players, neither difference makers this year). And outside of his big power guys, he really loaded up on speed guys. It seems like a very sound idea on paper, but will he hit for enough power? I lean to "probably" but you really never know. His staff has no real "ace", but 1 or 2 guys have that potential. None of his bench pitchers really do much for me, but he does have a few good young arms. A lot of question marks, but upside is there.
4 Clams
Love: also want to thank Clams for helping the draft run smoothly. Good job man. What do I love here? Let's start with his staff, which is the best in the league. Kershaw, Strasburg, Anderson/Anibal/Garcia, along with 3 legit closers. I like what he has done there.
his sticks feature speed/power guys McCutchen & Cargo, very nice duo there. Starlin Castro has only gotten better, & between Rizzo/Ackley, one of them has to break out.
Hate: I think he was set up perfectly to build a great team, but I think he got a little too prospect happy in the draft. Dont get me wrong, he flat out has some future studs, but 4 of his bench hitters may not even start the year in the bigs, if at all this year. And his SP, although great, lacks depth. Just has 6 starters.
5 VKC
Love: Just solid all around. Nothing really just jumps, but the pieces are there. I kept watching Ichiro, Utley and Werth fall, fall ,fall in the draft. I wanted all 3, just couldnt get it to fit within my team. VKC got great value on those guys. I'll throw Ortiz & Jeter in there too, if they play. His bench is loaded with guys that can and will contribute. Nice going.
Hate: I don't really hate it, but these comments should be somewhere in the middle. He has a really talented staff, but what Roy Halladay will you get? Dan Haren? Will Josh Johnson stay healthy? Mo Rivera? did AJ Burnett and Homer have fluke years in 2012? As you can see, the questions are piling up with his staff. Do I like the potential? hell yea. But even scarier is how quick it could implode.
6 Toula
Love: Outside of Earl, he has the best collection of top end hitters in the league. Btw Agon, Cano, Wright, JUpton, and even Hanley to an extent. Also has steady Yadier, SB guy Bourn, and potential break out guys Brandon Moss & Moreland.
He also made out fine on the mound. Cole Hamels & James Shields are guys you can rely on. Shields should enjoy the AL Central. Niese has been a steady, under the radar type. Im not fully sold on him, but he should be a fine SP3. Chapman is a stud closer.
Hate: Like Clams, I question at this point if he has enough quality SP. And he's not exactly as top heavy as Clams. That could be a problem if one of his main guys go down.
7 Louie
Love: I love his big 3 SPs, King, Gio & MadBum. They stack up with just about everyone. Pujols & Longo pace his offense. Really needs both to stay healthy cause it thins out a little after that. I think Homser is poised for a huge year.
Hate: I really cant get into most of his hitters. I'll admit guys like Morse & Quentin have nice upside, but it seems they are always hurt. These are imo the 2 most important guys on his roster. I cant fap to any of his bench hitters, or bench pitchers besides Wheeler. So im sensing some depth issues in the future.

Love: Im really liking my SP, I think I have a very good big 3, maybe 2nd or 3rd best in the league. And I feel Ive added some decent depth there too. Hitting wise i have a bunch of guys that can hit 20-25HR, my hope is that those all add up so I can compete with the big boys. I think my bench depth will also be an asset for me.
Hate: Was upset i came out of the draft with no official closer, though I do have a few in waiting. I could probably add another speed guy or 2 to help me with that category. And a huge big time power hitter would do me good.
9 Papz
Love: T think guys like Hamilton, Youk, & Choo will really benefit from their change of scenery. I mean really turn in some solid seasons. Beltran and Berkman will be key, if both stay healthy, you know they will produce. Konerko is just steady as all get-out. Miguel Montero was a solid value in the draft at C.
The staff is led by Cueto, and while you'd like him to K more, he is a borderline 1-2 SP. Kuroda is undervalued.
Hate: his staff as a whole leaves a lot to be desired. What Lincecum will he have? He really really needs that ace. He has a few upside guys on his bench like Johan and Liriano, but really, can you count on them?
10 Chat
Love: I really like the balance here, he has a mix of big power, speed, and a little of both. IMO his team will hinge on the 2 red sox he has, Pedroia and Ellsbury. Could really give him a boost in Runs & SBs, RBI.
Pitching wise, Price returns as the AL Cy young. Medlen was a stud last year as well in the NL, & Scherzer led all of MLB in K's. that's a nice top 3. Jarrod Parker has talent out the arse. He was also able to lock up 2.5 closers. Pulling in Bundy was a nice draft pick.
Hate: Definitely has some questions that are there. The 2 Red Sox guys come to mind. Can Seager & Desmond build on their 2012? These guys are huge pieces to this team. I know AZ tried to deal Kubel, so I wonder what his future is. He really benefits from hitting in AZ.
11 Chowds
Love: Chowds team has huge power potential, between Dunn, Howard, Soriano, & Granderson when healthy. Also has young up and comers like Lawrie and Middlebrooks. Solid vets like JRoll & Swisher. TOp to bottom, his hitting is really strong on paper. Has the potential to lead the league in HRs.
Jered Weaver is a bonafide stud. I think Cishek & Putz are more than viable closers.
Hate: his staff is what has him so low. I just don't trust those guys after Weaver. Wainwright is tried and true, but was really off last year. Marco Estrada & Bud Norris are next in line; can you trust them? Many of his main guys are aging, & have been injury prone recently. Guys like Howard and Soriano. Laroche has missed time within the last 2 years. Rollins has been up and down. Not to mention guys like Granderson & Lawrie starting the year on the DL, and Carlos Ruiz serving suspension. Overall this team could vault up; it has potential.
12 jew t
Love: What I love here: Holliday & Trumbo are guys I really like. Reyes if healthy will have a huge year. I liked the Vmart pick a lot, that could really pay off if he is the regular DH.
His staff seems ok, though i cant pronounce half of their names. Darvish obviously has the makings of a stud, he just needs to go out and do it. Tommy Hanson i like to rebound.
Hate: I'll start with his staff, while I called it "ok", it can really get ugly quickly. No real SP2(If Darvish is even a SP1?). I think Wade Miley comes back down to earth, and Im not totally sold on his relief guys. Hitting wise, his season really hinges on 3 guys: Freeman, Desmond Jennings, and Nelson Cruz. If the first 2 take the next step, he's in business. And if Cruz stays healthy, he's going to compete in the hitting categories.
13 cwill
Love: I love that he has Trout and JHey on his team, 2 of the best young hitters in the game. That is a nice start. Also has Moustakas, Profar & Machado. A little more unproven, but all are on the brink of really being something special.
His pitching, like Port's, is solid. He has 4-5 really decent SPs, as well as some good closers. He can take some categories on a lot of weeks.
I like how he added MLB hitters to his mainly minor league keeper bundle.
Hate: I dont really hate anything here, but I will just note: Overall he just lacks MLB hitters top to bottom. But should some of these prospects contribute this year, he could find himself in the mix.
14 port
Love: Port had a plan, and he stuck to it, adding several young studs that are on the brink. Myers and Taveras are prob 2 of the 3 best hitting prospects in the game. Trevor Bauer is one of the better arms, and I like how he added Pineda and Hudson in the draft, even though they are both hurt. Hellickson also was a nice grab.
His pitching is very solid, with CC and Dickey. Tho I have seen they are OTB, so we shall see how that plays out.
Hate: The team on paper just wont be able to compete much. THe Major league hitters that he does have, really aren't that great. Port will have trouble matching up in hitting categories, but his pitching as it stands now will compete

I think you are underrating my pitching. Especially now that Lohse is staying in NL and my #5.
You must have missed Aaron Hicks on my bench too.

And I kind of like my bench. Ruggiano, Reimold, Beckham, Colvin, Mesoraco.. all high upside guys IMO.

Lol. Those guys go from FA pool to solid role players in a year?
Posted on 3/25/13 at 8:19 pm to Toula
Lohse was a FA pool guy for 10 years

Nice counterpoint. Insult a top 20 SP last year.
Posted on 3/25/13 at 8:26 pm to Toula
No need to counterpoint. I said "high upside". I didn't proclaim them to be great.
If Lohse is a top 20 SP he should be your #2 SP and a guy you start every time out amrite? He'll be in the pool come July

Colvin will be good. I thought Reimold was coming off the bench, but I could be totally wrong.

Honestly you like your pitching more than I do, obviously. I feel Im rating it fairly, but that's just me.
I like Hamels and Shields.
and Niese too, but i see him more of a bridge guy, not someone i want to start every time out. Just when needed.
Mike Minor? big upside but hasnt put it together.
the other guys are meh to me.

Reimold will play if he's healthy. OF and DH.
Colvin will be more hard pressed for PT
