I thought this was an interesting article about Jimmy Graham's contract situation going into this year.
Yahoo Sports

quote:

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said he has no intention of changing the way he uses Jimmy Graham just to get around a possible showdown over whether the player is considered a tight end or a wide receiver in free agency.

"We're going to do whatever we have to do to win games, whether that's line him up wide, in the slot, three yards off the tackle, five yards off the tackle or right next to the tackle, whatever," Payton said in reference to the tight end.

I really wish we could do an extension this year. Last year was kind of a down year for him and I'm not sure the front office will have the bargining power next year that they have right now.

I hate how it's compared to the Jared Cook situation and he left the Titans!

Also, I wonder what effect, if any, Ben Watson has on JG's numbers this year?

Probably next year, then the cap goes up in 2015, get the deal done.

As a TE or WR? I know Suggs got some kind of hybrid exemption from the league. My guess is that the league might do the same for TEs that line up in the slot.

Either franchise tag, or be prepared to see him walk. He's going to be too expensive.

Graham isn't going anywhere as long as Brees is a Saint. He said so himself.

Unless he changes his mind, of course.

I wouldn't think Jimmy would be the kind of guy who wouldn't work with us. But you never know when they start seeing those $$ signs. I sure hope he sticks to his whole "I'll retire with Brees when he does" schtick

I think he may take a little less to stay with us, but if there is somebody offering more than 1.5 mill or more per year, who could blame the guy?

Either way I can't see him going anywhere, what's the difference between the two a couple million? I say he plays under the tag one year and then sign the next.

Damn man, you didn't even read the link did you.

the franchise tag for a tight end is far less expensive than it is for a wide receiver. This year, the difference is approximately $4.5 million on the cap ($6 million for a tight end and $10.5 million for a wide receiver).

A TE franchise tag is only about $6 million i think; I think we're going to see a colston type deal. He still gets paid, but it isn't the largest at his position (which he deserves)

JG had a great affect on his numbers last season with leading the league in dropsies and all.

It really doesn't matter. Jimmy isn't going anywhere. Saints hold the leverage with the franchise tag.

if Jimmy got soul, is injury free, and continues producing big in 2013 he should get a slight bump up over Gronks deal-

Signed an eight-year, $55.23 million contract. The deal contains $13.17 million guaranteed -- an $8 million signing bonus and each of Gronkowski's first three base salaries. Another $5 million is guaranteed for injury only. Gronkowski is eligible for annual $250,000 workout bonuses in the 2014-2019 offseasons. 2013: $630,000 (+ $30,000 workout bonus), 2014: $3.75 million, 2015: $4.75 million, 2016: $2.25 million (+ $10 million option bonus due 2/28 + $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses), 2017: $4.25 million (+ $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses), 2018: $8 million (+ $750,000 in per-game roster bonuses), 2019: $9 million (+ $750,000 in per-game roster bonuses), 2020: Free Agent

Watson was on ESPN radio last night and was asked that question. He was also asked if he thought he would see the ball when he and Graham were on the field together.

Watson said the coaches were up front and said they saw him as a blocker first and receiver second. He said he understood that Graham was a special player with "Wow factor" and that he was anxious to contribute to the team in any way he could.

Seems he understands that Graham will get a whole lot more targets than he will and he's good to go.

Thanks for the info. I think it will help that Watson is more of a receiving threat than Thomas ever was.
