McManaman, whose studs-up challenge on Newcastle United full-back Haïdara failed to result in any action by referee Mark Halsey during Wigan Athletic’s 2-1 win at the DW Stadium on Sunday, has escaped a violent conduct charge due to the FA being unable to take retrospective action as the incident was seen at the time by linesman Matthew Wilkes.

quote:

Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias delivering a withering criticism of the FA’s disciplinary unit. “It is clear from this decision that the current disciplinary procedures are not fit for purpose,” Llambias said. “Newcastle United, along with other clubs, have had players suspended for incidents reviewed after the game. Whilst not trivialising these incidents, they were not, in our opinion, of the seriousness of Callum McManaman’s tackle on Haïdara.

McManaman, who will now be free to play in Wigan’s FA Cup semi-final against Millwall at Wembley next month, has been defended by his club, with chairman Dave Whelan mounting a vigorous defence of the 21-year-old. Whelan’s claim that the tackle was “clean as a whistle” has been condemned by Newcastle, with Llambias ridiculing his comments.

It was on the ball, so how did the ref not see it? Regardless, I have always thought that the rule about not taking action if a ref saw the foul is ridiculous.

I've seen some reports that say his vision was screened by another player as the tackle occurred. Supposedly, he was in a correct position, but another player moved in front of him as the tackle occurred. That's one of the reasons you have the AR. Shocking that no foul was called and more shocking that no discipine handed out.
I can't believe that a competent AR on a game at that level could view that tackle and not call the foul and signal for a card.

Im pretty sure he actually gets the top of the ball, but still a shocker even though it doesnt look malicious at all.

I am surprised he didnt get a 3 match ban, the ref obviously didnt see it I've seen it replayed from his angle and a Newcastle player runs in front of him at the precise moment. However the reason the FA didnt take action is because in the match report 1 or more official said they saw it, so the linesman must have and didnt think any of it.
