I think Kruger was plan A and Galette plan B.

Kruger would have been WITH Junior.

I think that's true, but if there was only one OLB spot I think it would have been Kruger's. Call them Plan A and Plan A1 I guess.

Either way, I don't think they're expecting someone they draft to definitively be Plan A. There's always hope but these guys know unknowns are not good Plan A's.

If they were looking at Kruger, Galette is still a plan B in the coaches minds. They might have to start him, but that doesn't make him anything more than 1st in rotation.

But I do hope Galette or anybody comes alive in Ryan's defense.

kruger has nothing to do with galette. kruger is about who is playing on the other side of galette that is big and physical, can be a force in the run and be a presence rushing the passer.

Said this on an earlier post: They still need a veteran at this position if they want immediate production in pass rush. Next year will be kind of rough as they guys adjust. Also, the benefit of having someone on the roster that can demonstrate how to be effective goes a long way.

As far as raw talent at the pass-rush OLB position, I think the Saints are pretty good. One more in the draft and they'll be ready to go.

The Saints would not have started Kruger, Lofton, Vilma, and Galette as their LBs. that's begging for mismatches.

Galette would have backed up Kruger.

Maybe that's why every learned Saints fan has been dreaming over getting a Jarvis Jones or a Harrison at the right price.

They might fit a 3-4. And they would have been opposite Kruger, not Galette.

I really do think we have quite a bit of talent here. Scheme change could make a few of these guys stars IMO. Speed on the edges we really already have. Sure we would all like a big named pash rusher or a elite college kid but we cant afford one and the other will without a doubt not be a sure thing no matter who it is. Our gems on defense could already be there they just need to shined up a bit instead of rotting on the bench.
I really already like the D more now than last year just by the guys with potential we could have on the field.

OLB - Junior Galette/Braylon Broughton
ILB - Curtis Lofton/Austin Johnson
RDE - Akiem Hicks/Will Smith
NT - Brodrick Bunkley/Tyrunn Walker/(Akiem Hicks)
LDE - Cameron Jordan/Tom Johnson
ILB - David Hawthorne/Jonathan Vilma
OLB - Martez Wilson/Greg Romeus

Chris Chamberlain - Uh well maybe he could go to uh.

Uh, I wouldn't be dreaming about 35 year old James Harrison dropping into coverage to complement Kruger. I think that's the stuff of nightmares.

Be careful saying stuff like this. Some "Saints fans" get angry when you defend our players and think our players on the team we are supposed to root for will be much better in the new defense. I'm still enjoying the fact that I've been made to be the bad guy on a Saints board for defending Saints players.

One thing that Broughton has going for him is how scheme-versatile TCU's D was. The fact that they ran a 4-2-5 with the left side and the right side of the D operating independent of each other (google TCU's D explanation for more) - It was often left up to the DEs to cover short routes by the TEs, RBs and slot guys (as there were only 2 LBs immediately behind them). His lateral speed was very good tracking sideline to sideline... The thing Broughton was lacking was actual game experience due to him coming to the game of football late and having other outside factors affecting his focus. Much like JPP before and Ziggy this year - He's still very raw. Settling into the position change this year and becoming a student of the game in order to increase his knowledge and reduce reaction time will be critical. The good news is - He's embraced the fact that he's been given a golden ticket should he decide to use it and by all accounts he's taking it seriously.

ETA:

See how much better Jerry Hughes was this past year after moving him to OLB?

Broughton's measurables are better than those of Hughes.

Thats no big deal I could really care less everyone is entitled to their opinion. It really just seems that Payton may have been thinking about doing this for a while now with the type of guys we had brought in. Either that or he had time to look at the guys on the roster while he was gone and said shite why in the hell are we still running a 4-3, and what and the hell is Shanle and Herring doing on the field.

Yeah, I think watching games the way us fans do allowed him to see things from a different point of view, and he realized the personnel was a better fit for a 3-4. One of those deals where he needed to look at it from the outside to see what needed to change.
