I really just don't like the idea of trading down in the NBA draft
Well say we get the 4 pick, and Smart, Porter, and Mclemore are gone

We trade back for the Jazz or the Hawks for two 13-18 kind of picks, and grab guys like Burke to from Michigan to back up point and McDermott or Saric or some quality shooter-type SF

I just don't think there is much of a difference in talent in this draft from pick 5 to pick 20, to be honest.

Says who?

Maybe the Hawks think Smith is leaving after the season and Bennett is the top PF on their list.

They might be willing to trade up to get him

For starters, I'm not sure those guys go top 3. Playing around with the Chad Ford lottery I'm not sure there are as many other teams that need a SF as badly as we do, so I think he'll still be around by 4 or 5. If we end up with the 6th pick, I'll be worried.

I'm not sure we'll be able to get 2 1st round picks for our 4th round pick. If we could pull that off and get Burke and Zeller or something, I guess that'd be nice, but it seems unlikely.

I'd be fine taking Shabazz otherwise

The quality of players from the 5th spot to the teens is a big difference. What are you going to get from trading down? A bench player, a conditional pick and the chance to draft another bench player?

You target a player that you value highly and you draft him unless some team makes an offer you cannot refuse.

I'd rather just pick Shabazz Muhammad at 5 or 6 than take Alex Poythress at 12 or 13.

Well that's where we differ

I think he's going to be a garbage pro

I'd rather Bennett or hell, even Len or Olapido before Shabazz

Shabazz might not be a perennial all star but he's going to be a good scorer in the pros. If nothing else, he could be a guy to come off the bench and score. Alex Poythress is going to get drafted just because he's athletic.

I dunno, an undersized SF that can't pass, rebound, or play defense just doesn't do much for me

And I don't even think Poythress is even leaving UK after the season. I don't see him on a lot of mocks anymore.

That's a lot of lumping, especially with Noel on the board. Looking at the 2008 draft class, the guys like Rose, Westbrook, Hibbert that all got their 2nd contracts this season, the only 1st rounders that are with the same team that didn't get a max contract were Batum and Ibaka. That seems to be the script every year, if you're not a max or near max player you're a future trade asset. So if you're drafting a trade asset, draft the most valuable one you can get.

I have reservations about taking Noel too, but it's hard to deny he'd have more trade value than many other prospects taken in the teens.

Just curious. What does karma have to do with a chameleon.
