Got rid of cable/satellite

I haven't had cable or satellite for about 6 months now and turned on one of the TV's on the treadmill at the gym. How does everybody watch the crap on TV? Nothing but over exaggerated actors and terrible shows.

So you had it before, for an undisclosed amount of years. You cancel it and now you are high and almighty?
You sound like those people who start going to church and are instantly better people to everyone else.

I guess I should have mentioned that I still watch a lot of shows that still come on. I was really talking about the reality shows and such. I still watch Hulu and Netflix.
Merely stating since not watching all the shows for awhile I can say that I couldn't believe I use to get "into" watching some of this stuff.
I still watch sports through Watch ESPN and TV antenna.

Like I said before it's just an observation.
I will probably get DirecTV or Dish when I get into my house. I am in an apartment and didn't like that price I was paying for COX cable.

in 2005ish, I believed the reality tv bubble to be popping as shows were getting absolutely ridiculous in their premise.

You really have to take into consideration who is watching these shows. I think we tend to confuse successful with widely watched. Back when there were just 3 channels those did go hand in hand, but today when there's so much competition, a successful show can be successful just by appealing to a single demographic like 14 year old girls or 30 something women and gay guys.
I also have started to see reality shows like the Kardashians as women's version of sport. It's up and down, you never know what's going to happen next, lots of chicks all did up, living in fancy apartments and doing glamorous and exciting things. To many soccer moms in the suburbs they probably are similar to how men view pro athletes.

That's a good point. I never thought of it like that. This country is going to be like Idiocracy judging by the shows. Even the better shows are taking a hit because they have to "include" other demographics.

So let me get this straight. You are now watching Network TV shows, and are asking us
how we can watch cable/sat. crap? You are either
broke or stupid to post this. Or both.

Like I said earlier I didn't feel like paying 120 a month for 15% quality shows. I got rid of it and have "detoxed" from the reality shows and such. I watched some show and thought it was overreacted and obnoxious (I think it was Bar Rescue). I didn't realize it as much when I had it and now am stating it objectively and without bias because I use to like Bar Rescue and shows like that. These shows have a decent idea but just don't try to write with quality. It seems like the writer's guild went on strike again and all that is left are terrible writers.

I did the same back about a year and a half ago. Went from paying around $165 for cable/internet down to just $53 for internet. I couldn't justify paying the price for 600 channels when I only watch 3. Besides, I realistically was only watching about 2 hours per week of TV.
Between Netflix, FirstRowSports and Project-Free-TV I get all the visual entertainment I need.
Not trying to be smug, just agreeing with the OP

I do guess I came off a bit smug in the original message but I'm not degrading what others watch. It's your money and your time. I guess I should have worded it differently.

Basketball on firstrow is almost unwatchable. I gotta have HD

I do miss a lot of Basketball though. Football is no prob without cable/sat.

Agreed, hockey is even worse trying to follow that little pixelated puck around. Sometimes I'll snag a really good feed though, not HD quality but certainly watchable.
But...it is free and you get what you pay for (or don't pay for in my case)

I like watching TV. I can't ever see me getting to a point where I could cut the cord.

Just a bit. And probably everyone on the Movie
board has their guilty pleasures. I withdraw the stupid comment from my post.
