Began shooting several hours ago over in the UK.

A few hours back, Mark Gatiss fired the starting pistol on production of Sherlock season three and tweeted the following:
Exclusive! Ep 1 will be called The Empty Hearse. The game is on!
That title is a riff on The Adventure Of The Empty House, the Conan Doyle story that brought Holmes back from the dead. This new version has been scripted by Gatiss, though the solution to Holmes’ escape from the end of season two, is apparently a Steven Moffat-Mark Gatiss co-creation.
I’m curious to see how closely the stories are related, and if the hearse is playing anything like the role of the house in the original… though I can’t quite see how it would. As such, there’s likely an empty house too – or empty shopfront if my memory of previous seasons can be trusted.
Incidentally, an actor called Tomi May has been cast in the new series. His CV lists actual military experience and he looks like a fairly good match for Sebastian Moran, a key character in The Empty House, but… well, we’ll see.
The first production block, which started this morning in Cardiff, will see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman complete two episodes before taking a break to fullfil “other professional commitments.” The third episode will then be filmed from late Summer and we can expect to see the whole run on the BBC next year – presumably quite early on, but nobody is telling.
As you’ll see from the clapperboard image above, Jeremy Lovering is directing The Empty Hearse, and he’ll be in charge of one of the others too. Colm McCarthy will be directing the other remaining instalment – you’ll get a chance to see his chops with the next episode of Doctor Who too.

This is the first time I have heard anyone mention this show. How good is it?

Very good. Like Sherlock is supposed to be, which is not Jason Bourne.

May be better than the wire. I think it's by far the best show on tv.
