From a construction/fit/finish perspective, is there any reason (outside of obvious sentimental reasons for you CD) to purchase one of the originals versus a current production model?

I wanted an original blued one for as long as I could remember. I just like the blued better.

So other than the new ones only being produced in stainless you would have no qualms buying a new one? I read where there could be a frame cracking issue in some of the earlier originals?

If the slide stop knotch doesn't look like this they had issues
It was corrected very early in manufacturing.

Is the gun itslef worthy of the price tag or is it just because its cool as shite?

Yeah, What KR said.
VERY VERY early models has an enclosed frame notch which was causing the cracks. They fixed the problem very quickly and not many of them made it to the consumers.
I really don't see an issue with the newer models, unless you're nostalgic and want an "original" production run or a blued one.
I actually like the diamond-checkered grips of the new production models, myself.
I believe that no matter what production run you get, you're still getting a Colt-Quality 1911 and you can't go wrong with that.

You could get in on this, but it is probably headed north of $1k:
It's only money
This one will go for less:
Serioulsy, you will make more
ETA: Both guns have idiot scratches though.

Please don't bid on the second one. I'm currently the high bidder.
