Do you think honestly that our staff feels the need to upgrade either safety position, people keep talking like its a priority and if they still got faith in Malcolm, I hardly see it as a priority at all.

it seems to me their main priority is to upgrade the cbs and see if it helps the safeties

t doesn't seem like it is. They don't seem to be pursuing any safeties in FA and they are paying the ones we have fairly well.

I wonder how the staff evaluates Quddus at FS? He looked the part while filling in for Jenkins. We need a FS in the worst kind of way.

Super deep S FA and draft classes. I'd be shocked if they weren't doing their due diligence on the guys out there right now, but they can wait and see what players are out there when they start getting SUPER desperate. Harper and Jenkins were terrible last year, no way we go into the season without someone to push them to stop playing like douchebags out there.

I wouldnt mind drafting a replacement for Harper. I dont mean replace him this year, but 2-3 years from now, give time for rookie to improve.

FS is more of a concern than SS. Especially in a 34 defense.

Harper will be fine next year. We're basically gonna be running the old 46 where he won't have to cover anyone and can just roam around like a 5th linebacker.

Nope. Upgrade the corners, beef up the line and LBs to stop the run/pressure the QB, safety situation will resolve itself.

I shake thinking about Roman Harper playing safety in 2-3 years. He was slow and terrible in coverage at 23, I can't imagine him at 33.

In a league that's going to more and more 4-5 wides, and rookies are coming into the league throwing for 4000 yards, there's absolutely no excuse for the Saints to continue going into every season trying to figure out ways to hide Roman Harper in coverage.

They can keep firing defensive coordinators, looking for one that makes Harper look good, but unless he has some young Forrest Gump-style miracle, he's never going to be able to run with NFL WRs and TEs.

I'll go along with the sentiment that FS is more of a concern, especially in Ryan's scheme.

Honestly I think the change back to how Williams was using him will do him wonders and Ryan isn't quite as blitz happy as GW was so I don't see Harper being left on an island as much.

In Jenkins' rookie year as the nickel he was flashing serious potential. I feel if they had never switched him he'd probably be a starting corner.

In his time as a FS he has shown small flashes but has been highly inconsistent. FS is the worst position for that to happen with. He is truly the last line of defense and he needs to be a rock. Sure the other guys haven't helped him much, but he just makes too many mistakes.

With Harper you know what you get: a hard hitter that is great at run support when in the box and can be a very effective blitzer, but he struggles in coverage.

In Jenkins you can't point to anything he is really good at.

All that said, I think IAQ has shown flashes of being a playmaker at FS and could have a real chance to start should Jenkins continue to struggle.

We should be okay at safety but it wouldn't hurt to draft one.

I still think Jenkins makes fundamental errors in his reads. I would think that someone regarded as the top safety in his class (coming out of college) would not need this long to learn. I've already said I like Harper and I think he'll work in the new system rather well.

Honestly though, the Saints just don't have the budget to really make an impact with a proven safety. I think they might pick up a few UDFAs and see where it takes them.

totally agree. I mean he does play good in the box but he doesn't do much if anything at all in pass coverage. This new scheme should cater to his strengths a little more but you just know he'll have to drop in coverage a decent amount too and that is scary.

I'd like to give them a little bit of a break because of the scheme this past year though. Nobody on the D had appeared to have a clue of what was going on in the early stages of the year and Harper/Jenkins seemed to get most of the blame and I thought that wasn't fair. But that is just my opinion.

but they really struggled in the playoffs in the season before that. That 49ers game was frustrating as hell. And for everyone who was wondering if Jenkins would have made a difference since he had missed the Seattle playoff game from the year before, well, they got their answer.

but the fact is our run defense was the worst it had been in years in 2012. Even when Quddus and Bush played it was the same case. Believe it or not, I'm hoping for a better run defense more than anything this year. I've just come to the realization that teams will get their yards in today's NFL, especially in the passing game. Even a tough 49ers D looked helpless at times during the Super Bowl.

I think with a better run defense we'll get more from our DB's so they can focus on their receivers.

My belief is corey white was drafted to replace harper in 2014 as our SS and if malcolm didn't pan out, we'd bring in a FS soon enough. upgrading the DB's just means greer (love him and think he's underrated, but he is old) is gonna be retiring soon enough or at least maybe cut. PRob shown he can keep up with the fastest receivers, he just needs to turn his God damn head more often.

Quickest way to boost run defense is to score early and often. Our run defense sucks last night year but we were often behind which made it much worse.
