Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he and co-star Martin Freeman have signed on for four seasons of Sherlock. In a recent interview with RadioTimes the actor said that they’d agreed to do two additional seasons of the popular BBC show, but that he wasn’t sure how that would play out.
“We’ve agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that. All I know at the moment is I’m doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three.”

Cumberbatch indicated that he’d love to see the show go on well beyond the 4 seasons that he has agreed to. The plan right now is to film through the summer, at which point Freeman will break for The Hobbit reshoots, and then return to production for the remainder of Season 3. Here’s hoping that they can continue to make this scheduling puzzle work!

Great news!! I'm about to watch the last episode of season 2 on Netflix. Great series. One of my favorite all time literary characters. They've done a great job adapting Sherlock to modern day while integrating the original characters from the book.

Damn. Great news. With the long break between 2 and 3 I was thinking it would be the last

That's basically six short movies, with Freeman, and especially Cumberbatch's stars on the rise, that's a good get for the producers. Lookin forward to seeing the series come back.
