I have a mini 14 that is almost brand new. I need a scope and ammo for deer hunting next year. What do you guys recommend? I know I wont be making half mile shots so I shouldnt need a $800 scope.

.223 is not suitable for deer hunting. World domination maybe, but not deer hunting. 4x scout scope, and good luck finding ammo

A different rifle for starters....
But if you are going to shoot deer with a mini-14, I would recommend a good spot light and scope. (Earhole, Hoist, and collect jail time)

Don't buy Lake City M885 steel penetrator rounds for deer hunting. Don't buy 45 grain varmint rounds. Don't buy tracer ammo.

Likely a heavy bullet in the 70+ grain category...but I am not sure what the twist rate on the barrel is, so they may tumble at long distances...

No it'll kill a deer just fine. I was making a joke, thats why I went ahead and answered your question after. Some say it wont kill a deer quick enough and you could lose the blood trail, but thats possible with any caliber.

mini 14 is a good varmint gun, but is not the best choice for deer hunting. I wouldn't hunt with anything caliber lower than a .243. If your a good shot, just get a moderate .270 or 30-06 if you want a good deer rifle with a Nikon prostaff or something like that. I'm not saying that you cant kill or hunt deer with a mini 14, but it just not practical

I wouldn't hunt with it due to the small bullet. Not gonna find much ammo over 55 grain. You'll need a really good shot or a neck shot for a good kill.

It'll definitely kill deer-many, many deer have been killed with a 223-but it isn't ideal. You can get a decent Savage or Mossberg combo in a much better whitetail caliber for around $400. Just MO.

You can bring down planes with a .223 but not a whitetail.

I'll say it.

I killed my first 5 deer with a mini 14.

That said, I shoot a .270 or 300 mag now.

It's not the best gun for the job unless you are 8 to 10 years old, but it will damn sure kill them.

This.

IF you decide to deer hunt w/ your Mini 14, be sure it has sufficient accuracy (earlier ones were frequently notoriously inaccurate, although that's supposed to have been corrected) and use the right ammo. IF you can find it, I'd get a load designed for deer hunting. Shoot it beforehand to be sure the barrel twist of your Mini 14 will handle such ammo as many of these loads use heavier than usual bullets. Of course, don't use any full metal jacket bullets (illegal for big game hunting in most states and not a good big game bullet).

after trying many different types of ammo in mine, including hand loads, I found that it shoots plain old Remington Core-lokt soft points the best. I think I put a Burris 3-9 or 4-12 on it, can't remember now, I havent shot it in forever
