Between now and Tuesday we will GET the answers but here we go:
Herring (RELEASE) - never really panned out on D or ST "ace". Easily replaceable with a rookie with more upside
BUSHROD (re-sign ) - he needs the saints as much as the saints need HIM. He wants to be here and think he's smart enough not to break the bank. The drivemans sources say he married a LA girl and just had a kid
Will smith (restructure) - leader who's game NOW translates to the 3-4. Even if you cut him you have to go out and find someone to replace him, which comes out to about the same. Might as well keep the familiarty, trust and leadership qualities that go along with IT.
Vilma (release) - sorry long John but we gotta let you go. The writing was on the wall WHEN we signed Lofton. Now we switch to the 3-4 which is the reason Vilma was traded to us in the first place. Payton doesn't want the bounty to linger
Harper (restructure) - with the amount he's making and the number of options in FA he'll realize its in his best interest to restructure.
DRIVEMAN OUT
Herring (RELEASE) - never really panned out on D or ST "ace". Easily replaceable with a rookie with more upside

Herring: Thought he'd be cut long ago. Makes me nervous that they may actually keep him. Maybe they're keeping him for ilb depth? Not worth the price imo.
Bushrod: All depends on his market value. Maybe it'll be low because teams will see that Brees makes him look better. Or maybe a desperate team will overpay. If the former, great sign him and move into the draft with bpa in mind. If not, you have to hope another good left tackle is out there for a more reasonable price or #15 will likely be LT.
Smith: If he doesn't take the cut(which looks like he might not) he is gone for sure. That's where I'm leaning. He will be missed but you can't cripple yourself cap wise for loyalty or leadership.
Vilma: Pretty much the same as Smith. I see a slightly better chance he takes a cut being that his contract is smaller, but still don't think it's realistic.
Harper: You hope he restructures, but he is not going anywhere if he doesn't.
Daniel: As long as another team doesn't think too highly of him I believe he stays. But he barely has any real game film, unlike other "hot" backups like Schuab, Flynn, and Kolb. Being that the trend has lead more to busts with these guys recently, I don't think Chase will break the bank.

Hope not. He's not worth the $6 Mill (+) he's getting now...much less a kicker on top of that.

Won't happen. He either takes a pay cut or he's out. To restructure his contract in any meaningful way will necessarily cause major problems down the line. Even if a replacement cost the same, after taking the cap hit, it's time to rejuvenate the team with new blood.

Don't agree. Pay cut or gone...for same reasons as Smith.

Sorry brother by restructure the driveman MEANS a pay cut. No doubt if big Willie doesn't come down he gone. Same for harp
Posted on 3/9/13 at 5:37 pm to death valley driver
You otherwise fine folks are nuts if you think Harper is going anywhere. He's a perfect scheme fit for Ryan's d and Payton has not once mentioned needing new secondary players, whereas he has mentioned OLB and DE specifically.

True, but he's commanding an absurd amount of money for his role in the defense.

It's actually a no brainer...I see them wanting to keep Vilma, Smith, and Harper. If they restructure great, if not they are toast.

I don't think Will Smith fits a 3-4. He's just aging, and fat. And overpaid.
If he stays, he's probably a bench player at best. And they'll pay him way too much to do that.

@Hoodoo Man, I agree but the ball is in his court. The Saints are not going to cut him.

If he stays, he won't be making anything close to what he's making now. So it's not really fair to say that.

His bonus is about $6 mil(give or take a couple of mil). Do we really want to add more money on top of that? I think a cheaper, younger alternative would be the better option(ie draft or someone on the roster).

It's common sense. Why would they cut him? His salary is high but he is neither too old and injured(like vilma and smith) nor a poor scheme fit. Releasing those 2 will create all the cap we need to sign a LT and maybe another player or two.
Posted on 3/9/13 at 6:28 pm to landrywasbeast30
If we cut him it will cost 6 and we still have to find a replacement which would be another 3-5 for someone competent

This is a post from another thread:
OAK has the biggest amount of Dead Money for 2013 at a whopping $17,547,952. Coming in Second is ATL with $11,526,938. Atl is under the cap but they crippled themselves by restructuring contracts year after year. This is a reason the Saints would be wise to part with Smith and either Vilma or Harper. Smart thing to do here is keep the guy who gives you the least amount of hit and gives you the most production, which in this case is Harper.
If a player is cut before June 1st, his base salary is the only thing coming off the books. the bonuses for the current and follwing years still count against the cap for the current year. If a player is cut on or after June 1st, the only thing counting against the cap is his current year bonuses. However, teams are allowed to cut two veteran players before June 1st and designate them as June 1st cuts.
Will Smith is due to get a roster bonus at the end of Mar, so if he is cut it will come before that but most likely way before because FA starts Tuesday. If Smith is cut and designated as a June 1st cut he will count $4,391,666 towards the 2013 cap compared to $14,451,666 if kept.
John Vilma being released would count $2,632,500 towards the 2013 cap, compared to $8,632,500 if kept.
Cutting both of these players would put the Saints at $3,999,176 going into FA.

Let's say player x is on a one year deal and costs $10 mil, $6 mil in bonus and $4 mil in salary.
If we cut said player we would save $4 mil but still owe the $6 mil bonus. If we dropped him to vet minimum(let's say for player x it's $1 mil) we would owe $7 mil(the $6 mil bonus plus the $1 mil salary).
There is no way to eliminate the bonus. That has to be paid since it was up front money.
So cutting Smith and Vilma will be cheaper than keeping them no matter how much of a pay cut they take. You cannot eliminate their bonuses in negotiation.
