After all this shite, (BTW one of you bama hunters could have told me you have to have all feeders down 10 days before Turkey season just like deer.)

Dont want to get up early etc. Kids today. Well my son is going to be on restriction anyway for being disrespectful and not doing him homework etc.

So his punishment will be to stay in his room all weekend or going turkey hunting. I assume he will take the hunting option. Punishment is a Turkey hunting trip. Can you believe this shite? kids today.

First year in bama. I Thought feed just had to be gone aka you cant hunt over food like most states. I knew ten days applied to deer but didnt think about turkeys having same rule. Most of them are really deer feeders and I just loaded cracked corn in them last month. They were a bitch to get up in the trees and should have already run out of corn this week. Guess I will know tomorrow. Can I just live them up and reload them in May or do they have to come down?

Leave them up. Its fine as long as there isnt corn in them come Oct 15.

If you have any Alabama questions ask me, I have been living here for the last 3 years.

I am basically planning to get there about 4 am tomorrow am and be set up about 430-445. I am putting three decoys out in a small clearing with one killer B, and putting a blind about twenty yards and 90 degrees from where I expect turkeys to come out and let my son go back to sleep in the chair and start owl calls right at day bring and then do yelps copying what I hear(Box or slate call) or when they reply and try to bring in a drake. If that doesnt work have a few more spots but probably screwed. (LOL)

Ok here is my first day report. First of all 3 am in really freaking early got a whole 45 minutes sleep but was set up an hour before sunrise.

Double chair blind is freaking awesome. Get one. It keeps the damn bugs off of you too. I got mine on sale at Dicks for 90 bucks. It will be great for deer season is very portable and easy as hell to set up.

Killer B decoy, not as much. It is not hard but in low light it was a bitch and that damn spider wire caught caught on everything including sticks etc not to mention me. I am switching that to a glow line mono or something unless one of you guys tells me why. Anyway I thought it looked cool.

The Barred owls loved my call and I had at least half a dozen going nuts in no time. No gobbles not a single one.

Finally, I heard some clucks and got some birds from behind me to maybe 150 yards then they quit. Heard few fly downs and realized the birds are 1000 or more yards East of where they were roosting last month. As they gathered, I tried with my hotbox to get some interest nada. So i switched to jackpot glass slate call and quickly got responses. AS my sleepy son said "They like that one dad" but still clucks and such but they started heading to me. Got maybe 200 yards or so and then veered away. By nine it was dead. So I moved to next spot saw tons of tracks and quickly realized that I should have started here but it was 50/50 shot and I knew I would get it wrong. I called for about an hour got some clucks purrs and movement but no takers, and had to get these damn feeders down although they were all out of corn except one anyway. So I tried again at another spot from 1030 TO 12:00 AND FINALLY GOT MY FIRST GOBBLE. But it was past when I said I would be done and it sounded like it was half a mile or more away and didnt get anything again for 15-20 minutes. (And my son was now done, disputed my gobble and the bees were starting to find a way into the blind.)

In sum, it was really fun, weather was overcast but nice, bugs not bad yet, and thought for about 20 minutes twice I was on the right track. What I learned so far:

It may be too early? This same story from two buddies hunting Citronelle area.

Someone told me they dont gobble much on overcast days?

My calling need lots of work. I need to make clucks better as that is aways what I have heard 90% of the time and I could get cluck responses often, but kinda lost after that. Hotbox doesnt sound good and could not get consistent clucks purrs from slate. Any ideas?

My yelps ranged from good to WTF? and I am sure I was calling too much but I wanted a response and got bored. How long do you wait when you are getting responses than then they stop?

I felt like I was talking to hens all day.

Any advice appreciated. What about afternoon hunts, my cameras and experience up there are still showing good movement about 4 o clock? Is it reverse of deer hunting, here morning is by far the best?

Here's a link to the Alabama Dept of Conservation. You can find everything concerning seasons, bag limits, creel limits, etc.. on this site for all hunting seasons and fishing. Hope it helps you in the future.

Go in the afternoon and listen for them to fly up to roost, set up near them the next morning, wait for them to fly down and then call one over. Don't call to one on the roost, just wait for them to fly down, then call. Remember it takes a turkey a long f'n time to get to where you are if you are a 1/2 mile away or so wait on him.
