Saints Zoom Mock 2.1 {updated}

If you missed my first mock you can check it out here.
1st Round. Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU
Mingo is a tremendously talented player who, for much of his final season, was considered a top-5 pick. He takes a bit of a tumble for a few reasons: 1) he was underwhelming in terms of production as a junior, and 2) he's so light. A closer look at his film would suggest the production dropped because LSU dropped him back into coverage more often. He's not big enough to get gritty with SEC tackles as a down lineman, but he can work in space thanks to fluid hips. Anyways, he's obviously a high risk/high reward player who happens to fit a major need for the Saints. Now that Anthony Spencer is going to remain with the Cowboys, the team could really address the OLB spot in round one.
3rd Round. Leon McFadden, CB, San Diego State
McFadden is a great press-man corner. He's feisty at the line of scrimmage, but he also has fluid hips and good instincts for reading a quarterback. He's not huge (5'10", 190 lbs.), but he plays bigger. Also, his straight line speed isn't tremendous, but he has sound enough technique and instinct that he could come in and challenge for a starting spot immediately. It also helps that the Saints were checking him out a lot during the Senior Bowl.
4th Round. A.J. Klein, ILB, Iowa State
A.J. Klein was a beast for Iowa State, and a force to be reckoned with in the Big XII. I actually have my doubts that he'll even be available here in the 4th, but if he is, expect the Saints to strongly consider him. Klein compares favorably to Sean Lee of the Cowboys with his ability to stuff the run and make plays on the ball. In fact, he tied the NCAA record for linebackers with 4 INTs returned for TDs. Throw in his great tape from the Shrine Game, and you have an absolute steal in the 4th round.
5th Round. Sean Renfree, QB, Duke
previous pick: Xavier Nixon, OT, Florida
Since it looks like Chase Daniel just became the second, perhaps first, best free agent QB on the market with Matt Moore re-signing in Miami, I'm changing this pick to a quarterback. Renfree is 6'3", 219, and also coming off of a torn pectoral in his throwing arm; an injury that he suffered on the last play of the season I believe. At Duke he was coached by David Cutcliffe, who is best known for having tutored both Payton and Eli Manning earlier in their careers. The all-time leading passer in Duke history is also a favorite of Mel Kiper, and says he compares to Matt Schaub and Matt Hasselbeck. He would come in and have a chance to compete for the backup spot as long as his injury checks out.
6th Round. Rontez Miles, S, California (Pa.)
I actually just stumbled upon Rontez Miles after browsing on the CBS Sports draft pages and YouTube. I came away really impressed. Miles is a hard-hitting, versatile player. He's got coverage skills to make plays on 50-50 balls, and the speed-strength combo to bust up plays in the backfield. At the very least, he can be a good special teams player. Definitely check out this highlight video of him. There's also a fit because Bduhon55's "Update from the Inside" said the Saints are really scouting Cal (Pa.) hard. So, here's a fit!

Just out of curiosity, what's your beef with potentially drafting Mingo?
I thought I dropped some knowledge in that other thread earlier.

Just say NO ... To Mingo.
I get the saying no to Mathieu stuff, but to immediately say no to Mingo, I'm not so sure. I understand the skepticism, but he was still a very good college player with very legitimate first round talent. If it's any consolation, I'm not an LSU fan.

I just see him getting beat way more often than not by NFL lineman, and I don't think he has near the repertoire of moves or the strength to consistently get to the qb that a guy like Jones showed. He chased down a lot of plays at LSU, but a lot of them were blown up already where the qb or ballcarrier was already flushed out due to pressure from Sam on the other side or up the middle. He won't have that luxury here...at least not yet(we can always dream). Even as an OLB he still has to beat his guy. He'll have a bit more of a head start than he did with his hand on the ground, but I just see him getting pushed right up the field past the qb often by the behemoths that play Oline in the NFL or just stonewalled. I'd love to have him, just not in the first half of the first round...especially when I think Martez could be a very similar player at that position.

That's an answer I can respect. He does have work to do when it comes to his hand usage in coordination with disengaging offensive lineman in one on one matchups. This is something that can coached up on & improved on with practice.
What can't be coached is his straight line speed, ability to change direction & the overall smoothness he showed during drills at the combine replicating dropping into coverage.
Not only am I high on Mingo's phyically attributes & overall potential but he's a very high character guy who fits the mold when it comes to the type of player Payton has a point to bring in during his tenure with the Saints.
Your concerns are legit but I don't think those are concerns to turn away from Mingo at the 15th slot. We could sit here all day/night & post cons of drafting Jones, Jordan & Ansah. Well I know I certainly could. Truth is we all know the draft is always a gamble but out of all of the pass rushers who are looking like 1st rounders, Mingo is the player I feel comfortable about putting money behind especially if he plays in a 3-4. This is why I mentioned earlier about bringing him along slowly like Aldon Smith & Pat Swilling were.

TISA hates LSU players.
Always has.
Always has.

I think mingo fits perfectly into what we need and want. Would be ideal to get him but I don't see him there for us at 15.

What is Mingo's real weight? I've seen him as low as 220's.
Posted on 3/6/13 at 9:19 pm to Patrick O Rly
No idea but he certainly needs to add a little muscle.
Posted on 3/6/13 at 9:28 pm to Zoombop
Mingo will not be available at 15
Posted on 3/6/13 at 9:37 pm to UncleRuckus
Mingo wont be drafted by Saints even if he is available. My money is on a DB.
Posted on 3/6/13 at 9:38 pm to Patrick O Rly
Real weight is probably about 230-240. Von Miller plays around the same weight. Not saying that Mingo will be nearly the same player (though he could be), but I'm just saying that his weight, or lack thereof, may be a little overrated.

Mingo checked in at the combine at 240-ish.
As for this mock, I like the idea of a DB in the 3rd, but I really really really think they're going with the nose tackle from missouri southern, if he's there and nobody way up on the board has slid somehow.

Maybe I should do a mock that doesn't even mention our 1st round pick. What about the other ones fellas?
Posted on 3/6/13 at 9:42 pm to Zoombop
Good job on the mock.
I would love to get Mingo but I think he will gone before us.

I don't think he'll make it that far. Plus I think Bunkley will fit nicely as our NT as Ryan likes them to be a bit smaller. I believe depth on the d-line will be acquired via free agency. Kenyon Coleman is a potential acquisition as he has followed Ryan from Cleveland to Dallas. Versatile, veteran depth. Don't count out Tom Johnson and Tyrunn Walker either. Lots of big bodies to go around on the d-line.
