I know several high school teams that use some type of computer based or touchscreen scorebook. I would imagine most colleges use the same.

I've used both. Personally I prefer longhand, but it is certainly alot cleaner digitally. As for your question, I don't know the answer. I would guess that the official scorer does a book while the "gametrackers" are electronic (obviously).

the ESPN iScore app is solid as well. others I've used are not so solid.

Pretty sure that's how it's done.

Are there any good free apps out there? I like keeping a scorecard for games, but I'm cheap!

your average scorebook will run about $5 and has probably 30 to MAYBE 50 games. Or you can spend $10 one time for an app and do unlimited games and have it year after year. Unless you are so pathetic that you are doing a baseball scorecard on blank paper, in which case there is no helping your cheap arse

I've used the Gamechanger app on my cell phone. Takes a game or two to get really good with it, but I really like the app. I THINK it's free. I downloaded it a long time ago. Don't remember.

My dad uses an iPad app for my little brothers team. It also displays live updates on the Internet. Pretty bad arse

If anyone does LSU games with the gamechanger app, let us know. I'll follow it. Getting the app for son's team.

I just downloaded it and entered the roster. I definitely won't be doing it every game though.

entire little leagues are scored and ranked this way. i am an app developer and wanted to do it but there are some really good ones that sync the whole league, track sll the stats for evry team etc

I used this app to recreate the games from a scorebook when I was coaching high school. Greatest benefit vs. paper is calculating stats. The app does it all for you and allows you to email the stats to yourself for printing.
