I think the pick should be Porter or Shabazz

I was very negative about Shabazz early on based upon about five minutes of watching him, but mainly based upon several things I had read about him that raised red flags.

I don't watch a lot of college basketball early in the season, but I think I'm going to be watching him and Porter when I get the chance in the next few weeks.

That said, it still seems in the NBA draft you take the BPA, right? Let's say, for example, we luck out and Ben McLemore is available. I keep hearing great things about the kid.

My biggest concern about Porter is he may be playing too well and will get picked earlier. I really want this guy.

I really don't know who I want.

Porter, Mclemore, Oladipo. Smart, Bennett, Noel.

The interesting thing about this draft is people keep saying it's a weak class and I don't necessarily think that's true. It's just a year we're there isn't a for sure number one guy, or even a for sure top two like in years past. It's a terrible year to get the number one overall pick, but it's a great year to be in the 4-6 range. Theres a decent chance you'll end up with the best player in the draft

To simply chime in: the sky is the limit for McLemore if he is mentally focused but i think he will play similar (not play style) to rivers this year. Catching on to the NBA will be tough but when he gets it, look out.

You have to go with Smart if he's still available when we pick. Great point guards are way too valuable in this league for any team that doesn't have a Lebron/D-Wade combo. If not, then I'd like us to go with Anthony Bennett. That guy is an ANIMAL- he reminds me of a young Charles Barkley. Nice jumper and can create his own shot. He could either play the 3 or we could go small with him at the 4 and AD at the 5 and give a lot of teams fits. Porter is OK, but he reminds me of a Wilson Chandler/Earl Clark type on the next level. Good player, but not a franchise changer. I wouldn't touch any of the bigs in this draft. With Noel having the most upside, I think every one of them is too big of a risk as a top 5 pick. IMO, it's McLemore, Smart, Bennett, Noel, and Muhammad that are the elite talents in this draft. After that its anyone's guess who will ultimately pan out.

Guy from NBA Draft Blog has a detailed breakdown of Shabazz's game. The whole thing is worth the read, but here is his summary.

quote:

Muhammad has his bright spots, but other than scoring, he doesn’t offer a team a whole lot. If he can improve some of the areas highlighted above quickly, he can be a very good NBA player, but there is as much a chance that he ends up as just a high-volume shooter.

This is what I've feared about Shabazz all along. Plus doesn't he pout?

He does pout.

There are some UCLA games on youtube that i've watched.

I like Shabazz but he might be the most selfish player i've ever seen. If he touches the ball he's shooting, with almost no exceptions. I don't know if I can remember a guy shooting literally 95% of the time he gets his hands on the ball. Doesn't matter what position he's in or whether or not he can get a good shot, its going up.

The best thing he's does is catch and shoot. Whether its spotting up or coming off screens, he's good.

Other than some post ups, he almost never creates for himself. Can't really break guys down one on one.

He does play really hard, but he's sooooo scoring-focused that he loses it when he doesn't touch the ball. There are times when he'll spend an entire possession stalking the ball from sideline to sideline, clapping his hands together screaming for someone to pass to him.

From the Chad Ford Lottery Machine Thread, I ran the simulator a bunch of times and was able to see how Ford ranked most of the top players for the Hornets/Pelicans' needs:

Smart
Len
McLemore

Porter

Shabazz

Oladipo

Anthony Bennett

Basically, Noel falls into one of the gaps above, but I haven't been able to hit one that clarifies where he falls.

This.

I see him as a stiff who won't develop into anything special before his rookie deal expires, at best.

Saw DraftExpress posted their prospect videos about a month ago. Warming up to Smart watching him play. Just have him work his arse off on the jumpshot and hope he works it out. He seems to do everything else well, potentially elite defender pretty early in his NBA career.

Ehhh, there's no AD this year. Mclemore might be the safest bet at number one overall but there's just as good a chance would get a great player with the 5th pick as with the second pick

If anyone prefers a loss to a win like that, they're not a true fan, no matter what the lottery circumstances are
