One word: quality.

Quality actors/actresses

Jennifer Lawrence's winning of the Best Actress for the role speaks for itself

Bradley Cooper just killed it out there. This is by far my favorite movie that he's in. And I could relate to him cause if I ever caught my wife in the shower with another man with our wedding song on I'd probably beat the hell out of the guy too. The dude was great for that role.

De Niro IMO had one of the best performances of his career in this movie.

Really good movie. Cooper's best work.

Really touching film. Anyone that has dealt with people with mental illness can relate to a lot of the characters.

She had great talent around her as well. Jessica Chastain carried a CIA film with a bunch of unknowns all by herself for 3 hours. She should have gotten Best Actress.

Not a knock on Lawrence, but this sudden hype around her sort of made people forget just how awesome Chastain was in ZDT.

Haven't seen Zero Dark Thirty. But I could see your point. I've thought she was quality in everything else.

blah

with the exception of the 30 second scene of her chewing the guys head off nothing else about her performance was THAT incredible. it was a great performance and certainly nomination worthy by all means, but the Academy got this one right. also Jason Clarke did a damn good job in this movie and carried most of the first half of it. I don't see why you're ignoring him?

if anything I think the little girl from Houma in Beasts of the Southern Wild was the second best female lead this year.

Jason Clarke is a nobody compared to some of the names in Silver Linings Playbook. Everyone knows who Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro are.

And part of why I didn't mention his name is in your post. He's basically in 1/3 or 1/2 the movie. His character is non existent in half of the movie.

why does that discredit his performance? also why does it help Jennifer Lawrence's performance just because Bradley Cooper is more famous than Jason Clarke?

and he carried the first half of the movie. Jessica Chastain was basically a silent duck in the first half of the movie until he was out of the picture.

SLP was one of my favorite movies in recent memory. Lawrence was well deserving of best actress, I'm glad she won.

This. Lawrence was overshadowed by Cooper and DeNiro. She did a great job but wasn't quite as strong as Chastain.

Totally disagree with your opinion. I think Lawrence was right there with DeNiro and above Cooper.

Chastain was boring............zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

now that just tells me you're a Lawrence hater because that is complete nonsense

Lawrence out shined everyone in SLP. she stood out over ROBERT DE NIRO, Cooper, and Weaver.

Chastain out shined, as one poster already said, "a bunch of unknowns" other than when Jason Clarke was on the screen during the first half.

This argument is entirely ridiculous. Just because she's surrounded by greatness should count off against her?

If I've learned anything about the M/TV Board over the past several years, it's that people will always find a way to bitch about BS that has nothing to do with the thread topic. This perceived injustice is silly. Chastain didn't win. They're both great actresses who turned in stellar performances. Let it go.

She was/is a cute little girl who recited calculated dialogue fearlessly. Hardly Oscar worthy. I liked the movie and all the other non-actors in it. But let's not go overboard.

Both Lawrence and Chastain gave fine performances. I liked Lawrence more, but wouldn't have been particularly upset had Chastain won.

I thought SLPB was the best movie I saw all year. The acting was really strong from everybody....especially DeNiro.

Argo was good, but I didn't think it was worthy of Best Picture.
