This was the first time that Klay has ever been fined for an on court indiscretion in his NBA career and the consequences will be more noticeable to him than just the $35K fine. The 23-year-old doesn’t have access to his money, all cheques are paid to Mychal and Julie who take care of his accounts for him to make sure Klay’s financial situation is set up for his post NBA career. So, naturally, Papa Thompson’s going to teach Klay a lesson of his own by fining him personally also, however, Klay will find out the old fashioned way.
“He will [find out he's been fined by us] when he sees that cash envelope show up a little short this week,” he said.

That's good Klay has agreed to this arrangement. I would not be so willing if I were him.

That's pretty awesome, assuming they aren't robbing him blind. I can see where it's easy to question their judgement though, afterall, they thought spelling his name with a K was a good idea.

Key part there.
But at what age should you be able to handle your money.

Parents are probably taking 20%

All they are doing is working as a financial advisor....
Same thing as many others, just they are his parents as well.... So they probably have more influence

Have you seen the list of ex-NBA players that are broke? The list is long.
This is a very smart thing on his part.

something in the range of 70% of professional athletes are broke within 5 years of retirement.

Getting docked allowance probably won’t help Klay’s reputation as a guy who looks like Cory Matthews on “Boy Meets World.”
Kind of weird but whatever works. Seems like if you raise your kid right, they won't need you to give them an allowance of their own money.

I remember something about his dad wanting to be governor or elected official of the bahamas (home country) after his playing career.

It's supposedly 60% but I still find that hard to believe. Although, I guess if you were in the league for 2 years making $400,000 then $600,000 and you were done, it's possible. I think it's a pretty skewed statistic.

it isn't really. when you think about how much your average player makes in a career. they spend it like they are making 10X as much as they are actually pulling in. it's the mentality that they will be iin the league forever, when most of them can't stay on a roster for longer than 4 years, especially in football.

Yeah, this and most of them coming from nothing. This is part of the reason I think that all high schools and colleges should require mandatory financial classes. You make me take art appreciation but don't teach me how to balance a checkbook or what an IRA is?
