40 Yards in 4.2 Seconds Is a Rare Feat

In the last eight years, over 2500 football players have been invited to the NFL Combine, but only four men, including two with world-class track credentials, have run sub-4.30 at the NFL combine:
1) Combine Record Holder Chris Johnson - 4.24
2) World Junior Olympic, USATF and Two-time NCAA Long Jump Champion Marquis Goodwin - 4.27
3) NCAA 60-meter Champion Jacoby Ford - 4.28
4) Miami Cornerback Demarcus Van Dyke, a collegiate sprinter who measured a svelte 6'1" and 176 pounds - 4.28
The SEC has yet to produce a sub-4.30 football player since the NFL Combine starting timing the 40-yard dash electronically. The bottom line is that with the current timing system, a player has to really do something special to run sub-4.30 in Indianapolis, so the next time someone talks about so-and-so's 4.2 speed, it's a safe bet that they're talking shite.

I ran a 2.35 one time....

Donte Stallworth ran a 4.26, I believe. Although that was pre-2005.
People really fail to understand just how fast a 4.45 is. All of those kids on Rivals with "4.45s" are really running two tenths slower and are much lighter than when they will be running it in the NFL combine.
A 230 pound guy running a 4.5 is much more impreesive than a 190 pounder at 4.4. All of this makes Margus Hunt's combine one of the most incredible of all time.

Lee County using a car and driver magazine inset claiming Bo Jackson ran a 4.1 trumps msb poster claims.

I remember that Oregon fan on here that was promising everyone that LaMichael James would run in the 4.2s. I think he ended up at 4.45.

Good points! Notice how the unofficial hand times are ALWAYS faster than the official electronic times. If there have only been four legitimate sub-4.3's in the last eight years, I'll bet there've been less than a dozen in NFL history. For all we know, Deion Sanders and Randy Moss wouldn't have run sub-4.3 if there had been electronic timing back in those days.
EDIT: Keep in mind that Trindon Holliday, an NCAA 100-meter champion, only ran 4.34 at the combine.

I'm pretty sure it was
There used to be a few Oregon fans on this board. Haven't seen them in a while though.

Didn't Jeryl Brazil run a laser timed 4.29 at one of the combines this past year?

That was a classic thread. Would love to read through that again

Daniel Jeremiah talked about this during some of the combine I watched.
He talked about how people set some prospects up for disappointment by overhyping their speed. They start throwing out "oh he's a low 4.4 guy" then the guy runs a 4.52 at 240 pounds and they are disappointed.
Jeremiah basically said, look, that's ridiculous. 4.52 is flying at that size.

Wherever it was, it wasn't in Indianapolis, and therfore it's meaningless IMO.

if you line up Brazil's track times with say a similar sprinter like jacoby ford, who actually ran sub 4.3, they just dont compare
Ford's 60m dash time is 2 tenths faster than Brazil's PR
and his 100m PR is 4 tenths faster than Brazils

Oh ok I was just wondering because I read that on the recruiting board. People who jump out at me are Pat Peterson and Calvin Johnson running in the 4.3s at the size they are.

Times were much faster in old rca dome as opposed Lucas Oil field. Several of the low and mid, 4.3s would have been been 4.2 in the rca dome.
