Week 2: LSU Baseball in Review
Lamar – W (8-1)
BYU – W (6-5)
BYU – L (4-9)
Southeastern – W (13-1)
Overall - (6-1)
Hitting: Mason Katz had a phenomenal week with 9 RBI’s and 2 homeruns to lead the Tigers in both categories for the week. Katz really set the tone for the game against SLU with his 3 run homer at the start of the continuation on Sunday. That ball hit the bottom of the scoreboard on a day where there was not much wind at the stadium. Raph Rhymes also had a big day going 4 for 5 with 5 rbi’s, while also showing he can hit more than singles with 2 doubles against SLU. Rhymes batted a sizzling .533 for the week. Freshman Mark Laird had a great weekend and overall batted .500 for the week. LSU would go on to route Southeastern in their best hitting performance of the season tallying 19 hits against Lion’s pitching. LSU hitting managed 40 hits in a 4 game span this past week.
Pitching: Cody Glenn is probably the story of the week IMO. He started off shaky in the first inning, but settled down and pitched 5 strong innings. He gave up 3 hits while striking out 5. This was his best performance in a Tiger uniform. Aaron Nola certainly did not have his best stuff against BYU on Thursday night. He had 3 walks and gave up a monster 3 run bomb. He was still able to give LSU 6 solid innings in what I would describe as a very un-Nola-like performance. Bonvillain cruised through 4 innings against BYU, but once again ran into trouble in the 5th. If Cody Glenn has a solid start on the road @ ULL in a hostile environment, I would look for him to get a shot at Sunday soon. Eades had a great outing against SLU. He went 6 strong innings and gave up 1 earned run in the (13-1) victory. Eades has a stout 0.73 ERA. LSU’s relief pitching got touched up this weekend against BYU. In particular Nate Fury really had a shaky outing Friday night giving 4 hits and 5 earned runs in 1 inning of work. Hunter Devall had a busy week of work with 4 appearances in 4 games. Devall gave up 0 earned runs in all appearances combined last week. Devall looks like he is one of the first guys getting the call out the pen on the weekend due to Cotton closing right now. Nick Rumbelow is scheduled to throw tomorrow against ULL. It will be interesting to see if PM moves him to closer immediately.
Overall, LSU had a solid performance for the week, but it was disappointing to lose in the fashion we did to BYU. LSU has an early season test on the road in an environment that will rival most SEC schools going against ULL Tuesday night. It will be good to see how some of the young Tigers respond. I’m extremely excited to see Cody Glenn pitch in a hostile environment.

Per PM - Rumbelow will be first out the pen tonight
Also per PM - if Glenn throws a "gem" he'll be in competition for the Sunday starter role with Bonvillain.

I bet he only needs to throw a few sharp innings. My guess will be a few sharp innings and then get him out so he is available out of the pen on Sunday and then start him next Sunday. Good stuff!
