NASCAR: How bad did Jeff Gordon get screwed by the points system change?

I believe it was changed in 2004. Supposedly Gordon would have had two more championships and Jimmie Johnson wouldn't have five.

He definitely would have been the champion in 2007. He was running away with it until the actual Chase started.

He "might" have more championships but arguing that directly is using flawed logic.

When the new point system was implemented, most teams changed their strategies during the year and put more emphasis on the last 10 races. The 48 team did this better than any and even now they are the best at it. Gordon's team did not adapt as fast as everyone which is what hurt him. He also had some bad luck in a couple of those years. You also can't overstate the importance of losing Ray Evernham over the long term.

You could also argue Gordon shouldn't have won the '97 championship.

The chase is the only reason why Kurt Busch won the inaugural one in 2004.

What happened to Kurt?
