IMO, we still don't know how good Monty can be. Given the circumstances of the past three seasons, we hardly have a reliable measuring stick. Next season is crucial for him, though. We need to see real improvement and consistency.

Don't bother whining about Monty around these parts. Everyone seems to be a CMW apologist on this board

Not really. They do put things in context, however. Everyone knows he has to produce next season.

as long as Dell is here I dont see Monty being fired for at least another 2 years even if we miss the playoffs again next year barring some extenuating circumstances

my thoughts are this: we have money this offseason to spend on FA, EG10 is relatively healthy (very loose term), and he is still there teaching Austin Rivers, AD, and Greivis (I think those 3 are the guys that need Monty or any coach for that matter the most), and you need a season or two for guys to play together and develop that chemistry

Bottom line for me: Monty is here at least 2 more years

Exactly.

I don't think a single poster here has nominated him for the NBA Hall of Fame like some of the tards like to imply. However, if you cannot see that he has been playing against a stacked deck for the last 2 years, you're being foolish. Sure, he hasn't proven himself a top 5 coach, but he also hasn't done anything to make me think he should be replaced.

I ask this of the haters:

Name 5 better coaches than Monty Willams who would also feasibly take the New Orleans job

The short answer to your question is next year the team should be playing to win, and the following year they should be expected to win. This is year 1 of the rebuild. Monty's getting the same 3 years to develop a new team that most coaches get, he just is in the unusual circumstance of surviving the last tear down and being around for the new rebuild.

The long answer is it's not a free pass, it's looking beyond the numbers to what is actually happening.

Year 1 - in the end it was what you expected from a CP3/DWest team, a high playoff seed and first round exit. But there were 2 stretches that season where the team looked like legit darkhorse contenders.

Year 2 - Received a 2nd place CoY vote because despite having such a poor record he took a team of mostly bench worthy players and made them much more competitive than they should have been.

Year 3 - The team is rebuilding and developing its young talent. This is what that looks like. What is Monty doing wrong if player development is the goal? Pretty much everyone but Xavier Henry seems to be developing. There are questions revolving around Davis' minutes, but between medical concerns and wanting players to earn their minutes rather than be anointed with them and pick up bad habits, I think it's arguable that he's doing the right thing and Davis shouldn't automatically get big minutes or closing minutes. I'm not saying I necessarily agree with his decisions, just that there are multiple ways to skin a cat and I don't think he's doing it wrong, just differently from what many fans want.

Year 4 - The team should have more talent 1-10 from development this year and offseason pick ups so they can start playing to win rather than playing to develop Monty's BFF's son or worrying about Davis' young bones.

Year 5 - Davis and Anderson should be AllStar level talents with a decent supporting cast and not making the playoffs would be a disappointment.

i think i've been fair on Monty...i like him. just acknowledging that his track record is not extremely impressive on paper, and he shouldn't be untouchable.

Admittedly, i've been getting annoyed with the Gordon situation. It's just a constant distraction going on 2 seasons now. I don't want to just give him away, but i think getting some value for him and moving on will end up being best for everyone.

It's only a distraction because fans and media are intent on making it one.

that's only partly true, imo.

all the stuff with injuries, and the fact that he has only played in 28 games as a Hornet are big contributors.

that's on Gordon or the team.

Who is it distracting, though? I haven't seen many players complain about it. Monty lashed out at the media for constantly pounding on it. Again, the "distraction" is to fans and "media."

Moreso than the news media, the sports media struggles to find something to fill time and column space. EG provides the perfect opportunity in N.O. and they take full advantage of it. I think it's a legit story to some extent, but I don't think the team is as focused on it as we or the media seem to be.

Gordon has made a bad situation worse for sure, but the haters and the people that are lashing out at the team are largely people that seem to not realize this is year 1 of a rebuild. We are this year where Orlando will be next year. Do you think Magic fans should expect Aaron Afflalo and whoever they draft will make them better than a bottom 5ish team?

of course it's legit...

I'm sure the injuries and his total games played in two seasons is concerning to the team, though.
