re: Wednesday 2/20 Match Thread - UEFA CL Round of 16, First Leg

That's what I found interesting. Obviously "unintentionally" handling the ball down to your feet, and immediately playing it is an infraction. But what about "unintentionally" handling it to your teammate, who plays it?

I love debating the handball rule, because the wording for it in the Laws of the Game is horribly vague.

Milan clearly benefited. I just don't know if it was deliberate to begin with. It's not like he was doing jumping jacks at the edge of his own area.

Handling the ball

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with
the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into
consideration:

• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
• the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
• the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement
• touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement
• hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement

That is straight from FIFA's website. IMO, he didn't violate any of those.

Milan is DOMINATING THIS MATCH!!!

Watching now and they are NOT dominating it in any way. They get the benefit of a terrible no call.

Sidenote: Why the frick was the ref stopping play when a Milan player (in his own half with the ball going the other way) went down. Let play go on and let the player get up after the run of play. Just odd reffing.

ETA: Nevermind

Also Zapata was far enough away from the ball when it was struck to react differently. That to me is also an issue with the rule.

Great clip. So he is out of the way if it doesn't hit the barca players arm first.

Actually that info is in the FIFA published Laws of the Game, but not actually apart of the first rule involving the awarding of the free kick. The rule just implies deliberate handling of the ball. The referee's consideration is in another section of the Laws of the Game.

Not really. It just makes the call even more interesting and convoluted, because Alba's arm is in a natural position and it looks like it came off the shoulder, whereas the ball definitely deflected off Zapata's hand.

That looks like a shoulder.

I'm with Lalas. Zapata needs to get off the plane in Barcelona with his arms out like that. Whatever's natural.

Yeah, that seems to be a shoulder vs. a hand well away from the body. I know that the position of the hand isn't necessarily the end all or be all, but I think it plays a part of the equation.

Camp Nou gonna be rocking for sure. It would have been great to get an away goal but I see Barca retolling their attack and scoring some goals in the next match.

His hand doesn't seem to alter the trajectory of the ball in any way. That is a great angle, which further leads me to believe it was the right call.

are you serious?

the ball, which was scorching off Alba´s shoulder towards touchline near the corner flag, clearly hits the AC Milan player in the left inner elbow and forearm.

Unintentional, for sure. Handball, for sure.

IMO, that's only relevant when used to imply deliberation. I don't think that it does here.

It was a good call based on every replay I've seen. Barca is my second favorite team, but that didnt look like a handball to me.
