Looking for a backpacking destination idea...
Posted by Chicken on 2/19/13 at 9:36 am00
did Sequoia National Park last year and it was awesome...hiked up to Pear Lake, set up camp for three days and then hiked back down.
Hoping to have a similar experience at a different park...any ideas?

Big Bend?

If you're going to do Texas, I would recommend Garner over Big Bend.

Are you strictly wanting to camp in a tent, or would you be open to staying at a cabin and hiking/exploring the area?

I had a great time hiking the Buffalo in northern Arkansas.

I would prefer places off the beaten path...or challenging to get to...the 7 hour hike up to Pear Lake would be considered tough for most people (moderate for expert backpackers)...as a result, there were not a lot of people at the camp site.
Glacier is incredible, but it does have bears.
Olympic National Park is gorgeous as well. The best time would be to go in August. Plus, you can camp right on the beach at La Push and witness one of the most incredible sunsets anywhere.

This is a really neat place.
One of the cabins is built between two stones. tons of hiking/camping areas in that part of the country.

Glacier or Olympic National Parks
easily the 2 most beautiful places int he lower 48
I'd throw mt. Ranker and north cascades in there for backpacking

Or do some section of the AT or PCT.

Olympic has black bears but the NP has never had an incident in the parks history. Most of the park now requires carrying a bear vault and are pretty strict on being safe regarding cooking etc.

A section of it.

North Cascades
Another great idea.

ok, let's talk AP...what section to consider? We really just want to hike up to some spot, set up camp by some lake and explore from there...not looking to cover a lot of ground.
