Sea Fox Boats

What are your opinions on the newer (2012 - forward)Sea Fox Bay Boats? I made a similar post about Nautic Star last week.
It seems that in the mid-2000s, the company developed a pretty bad reputation, but they seem to have come out of it.
Their boats, particularly the 22 and 24 bay boats, seem to come very well equipped for a decent price.

What say you?

The opinions on THT seem to be that they have turned the corner a make a great mid-tier bay boat with some top tier features. I like to get Louisiana centric opinions though because South LA is probably the bay boat capitol of the world in some respects.

They make a good looking boat and from all of the research I've done, those that own them, love them. The brothers took the company over, redesigned the line, and quality went up. I've heard they are stable and dry due to the weight and Carolina flare.
They are cheaper for a reason. They do cut some corners in fit and finish. Not as tidy with wiring as some others. No gas shocks on lockers. The 200xt that I was looking at came with a single axle trailer whereas the Sea Hunt I was comparing it to came with a much nicer tandem axle trailer. Your budget and what you are willing to give up to fit into your budget will be a factor but keep this in mind, if you ever want to sell it, it may be hard to overcome the history of Sea Fox. That was the tipping point for me.

That is why I realized that if I bought a Sea Fox and were ever going to sell it, I better hope the prospective buyer owned a later model Sea Fox or else I would take a beating.

That is a very good point. It is funny, companies like Donzi and Fountain have filed bankruptcy and people still think of them as top notch, but companies like Sea Fox seem to have really turned the corner and are still lagging in their reputation.
Something I have noticed in my bay boat quest is the top dogs like Yellowfin, Pathfinder, Everglades, and now, Contender are selling 24 foot bay boats at or above $100K.
On the flipside, you can get a pretty comparably equipped 24 Sea Fox or Nautic Star for a little over $40K with the same engine as the big boys.
It makes no sense to me.

The opinions on THT really scared me away from pursuing that line.
I was at first interested because a dealership near me had a great deal on a few of the 18'.
I checked 'em out and wasn't blown away.
It didn't look like a bad boat, just nothing special or unique.
After reading about it on THT, I decided to look elsewhere because there are too many other good options.
That being said, some people love them...I'm betting it's because they were relatively inexpensive (which isn't a bad thing by any means)>

A bad reputation is hard to overcome. I've seen on THT where current Sea Fox owners were getting slammed for talking good about their own boats and how much they loved them by people that never owned a Sea Fox.

FIL has a new 22 ft. and a buddy has a new 24 ft. They are solid boats and, as you know, a lot easier on the bank account that their more "reputable" competition.

There was a thread comparing them to Hewes and Pathfinders...they derserved to get slammed.
Again, from what I understand, it isn't a bad boat...but those are in a completely different class.

Obviously, you can buy a reputable boat used...but a 2008 PF or Triton is still gonna be in the high $40Ks...
I have a hard time paying that type of coin for a boat that is five model years old.
A used Everglades 243 or Yellowfin 24 is gonna run you in the $70K+ range.
I could get a new nautic star or sea fox 24, put a power pole, i-pilot and nice GPS/Chartplotter and still have $30K extra in the bank over a used boat from one of the big boy companies.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I would be more concerned about the age of the motor and mechanicals.
New motor, new warranty, etc.

Donzi and Fountain are considered top tier mainly because of their hull designs.
With THT reviews, you have to learn to pick out little details from the owners of the boats. A cheaper boat isn't gonna be 100% perfect. People who don't own them will cut at every big thing, and owners will mention little small things.
Boats are gonna be a lot like car manufacturers. On the low end you have domestic manufacturers, mid-grade would be Japanese companies, high grade would be German cars. Reselling them is gonna be the same exact way. If you think of it like that, it might help you make a decision. Do you need a S550, or could you settle for a nice Toyota Avalon? Would you want/need an Avalon,or could you deal with a Malibu?
Also, are you looking for long-term, or is it a stepping up point? What amount of usage are you gonna get out of it?

Here is another sweet used boat...for a hefty price.
LINK
I like the idea of the tower on the boat for Cobia fishing and will probably have one installed on whatever boat I purchase, if it is not already in place.
