It isn't that important in soccer. Bale, Walcott, Lennon and CR7 are pretty damn fast though.

I'm sure CR7 runs a 4.4 or under and plenty of other players probably do too. There was a thread on the first page yesterday showing how high he jumped for a header and that he had something like 5g's force when he jumped. Pretty sick

I found this posted on a couple of websites:

The only reason people know about 40 times for American athletes is Combines for drafts, the system isn't the same over there.

That would put him at about a 4.6 to 4.7 40. His sprint time may not be that great because soccer players never work on starts like football players. I bet his top end speed is high though.

The 40 is totally useless. Theo Walcott would rank among the top athletes (outside of track stars) in the world in it though. I bet he can break 4.4.

Comparatively speaking, Soccer players 40 times would be faster than their 100 meter times with athletes from other sports.

I would think high 4.4s, he swings his arms too much from side to side to really have true sprinter speed.

exactly. americans work their whole life at running 40s. in high school, we ran 40s during soccer conditioning and god knows why. that presumably never happens anywhere else. the guys mentioned in this thread, however, are fast as frick by any measure.

In my neck of the woods, sprints when training are normally much shorter in distance, and often initiate with contact (two players must break into the sprint after making a challenge type contact), or starting off from some type of disadvantaged situation (prone on the ground, behind a cone, etc.). It´s about reaction and getting to top speed ASAP. It´s not about time per se.

Gotcha. Rockwouañfelkfvoiearvnlneqort'3q0UYIUKj made it sound as if the 40 was used for speed training.

I heard of one guy who dominated u12 rec soccer in Lafayette then moved to Alabama where he dominated gump soccer. He ran a 4.5 in high school.
