I picked up a bottle of the BB Old Rasputin yesterday. Was curious to the FBD Krewe's thoughts on it. I am debating whether to go ahead and drink it or throw it in the box for a year or two

I have one that is in the closet currently. Will drink it in a year or so.

I've read good stuff regarding it though.

What temperature do yall currently cellar yalls beers at?

I have a little more than a wine box full of beers i'm aging, that's been in my fermentation chest freezer. If i take those out and throw them in a closet i could free up some much needed space. Seeing that i have a dark closet that stays near 65-70 year round, i should be good there.

I think 65-70 will be good for most beers.

Personally I keep my Stouts, Barleywines, and sours in a closet that is around 70. All other beers I keep around 55.

I was curious about the same thing so I searched online one day for info. I read forums (sorry no link) and it seemed that the consensus that I heard was "consistency of temperature" was more important than the actual temperature itself. That is to say that you should avoid fluctuating temperatures when storing your beer.

I wish I could do that, but I'm young and live in an apt without much space. My room temp varies with the seasons (to save money). Sometimes room temp is 77, sometimes is 60. If I get a bigger place, I'm definitely going to look into buying a chest freezer and running it at around 45 for beer. I could always throw certain beers in the fridge if they should be served slightly colder.

Correct. I try and cellar everything at 55, but when I run out of room I move strong beers and sours to the closet. They age faster, but I don't really see the diminishing affects that you would see in other styles at higher temperatures.

It's not perfect, but you have to work with what you have.

Same here although it may be closer to 55 in my closet here in SF than yours in LA. No central heat to raise the temperature either so it stays pretty cool normally.

I'm not sure if I am more jealous of your local beer selections or lack of a summer

Haha. Yeah, the weather is cool with me here. The wifey wishes there was more sun.

A sunny day in SF brings out quite the sights. Ladies don't get to wear those warm weather outfits often so they go all out when it gets in the 70s.

Sf gets WAY more sun than i ever saw in humboldt. We would get 6 straight months with no sun.

Stuff I'm saving for over a year or two ill put in the wine fridge at 55.

That being said I have a 16 bottle fridge and more than 16 bottles I want to age so I have some overflow into a cabinet. Looking for two deep freezers soon. One for cellaring, one for fermenting (and eventually, one for kegging)

Less than a year shouldn't matter as long as there aren't temp fluctuations and around 70 degrees or below.

I need some help on must-hit breweries and brewpubs in the SF area. I'm headed that way with a couple of buds in June. Already booked a hotel a couple of blocks from RR.

Now, you need to leave me a few good beers for when I make my journey to Specs in Houston and The Woodlands in 2 weeks.
