LSU 57, Alabama 60 - Recap

Johnny O'Bryant's career high 22 points weren't enough to lift LSU (13-8,4-6) past Alabama (15-8,7-3). The Tigers continue their woes in Coleman Coliseum as they weren't able to finish their comeback. With 9:27 left in the second half, Alabama took their largest lead of 11 at 45-34. With 13 seconds left, LSU had two chances to tie up the game with last second shots by Stringer and Hickey; neither fell.
It was the first game of the season that LSU was unable to record a blocked shot. LSU also had their lowest steal total of the season at three (all by Hickey). LSU was able to keep their turnovers down with only 11 on the day, but their inability to cause commotion on the defensive side of the ball told the tale of the game. Alabama only turned it over 10 times, had 9 blocks and 6 steals. They out-rebounded the Tigers 43-36.
Johnny O'Bryant turned in his 9th double double of the season and has taken the SEC lead in that category. His 22 point, 11 rebound performance is just another JOB type game. He has been nothing short of impressive since fully healing from an injury around the start of SEC play. Coleman was able to score 11 points after a season low 2 points against Vanderbilt. In the end, LSU wasn't able to get the clutch shot that they have hit during their current 4 wins in 5 contest streak.
LSU had their second lowest SoS output on the season behind their lack of steals and blocks. Even with the lack of defensive production LSU has been accustomed to, they had two chances to tie the game with under 10 seconds left.
With the loss, LSU falls to 4-6 in SEC play and 3 games out of fourth in the SEC. They play @South Carolina Thursday night on ESPN2 before returning home against Mississippi State Saturday, meaning LSU plays the two last place teams this week. With a great shot at winning both, LSU could be looking at a .500 SEC record this time next week.
If the season were to end today LSU would play Texas A&M in the second round of the SEC Tournament after earning a first round bye. If LSU can get to fifth or sixth, they would ensure they play a bottom four team in the second round. If they can get to fourth, they would get two rounds off and start their tournament in the quarterfinals. Looking at the remaining schedule, LSU still could finish anywhere. It is most likely, in my opinion, that the Tigers finish between sixth and seventh. Their schedule is manageable so finishing better than that is definitely a possibility.

SOS, I am a fan but not a BB junkie. What did you think of the refs? In most games, the questionable calls even out... but in this one to me it wasn't even close. It seemed to be over and above the normal "home team" calls the home team normally gets.

It was horrible.
ESPN crew questioned it
Jj who rarely rides officials was riding them and one time during timeout even went after one
Worst crew I've seen in awhile and that's being use to.our shitty sec refs

Typical sporting event on the road vs a team from Alabama.
I turned that shite off with in the last minute with all of the bad calls.

Im really not one to really talk out too much on the officials. I know their job is hard, and we have the ability to see it on TV in HD.... I know that we had 2 chances in the last 10 seconds to tie it up and missed both.
Tough loss, but not a bad loss. I think this team shows promise and could make a little run in the NIT if they got hot.

I understand that, but that missed travel on the rebound was inexcusable. Bama seemed to travel on every other possession and the worst part was, they often traveled into a foul (my biggest ref pet peeve in general). Two of the block calls should have been charges.

Fornicate the CharminDetergentTeabagMulliGumpNecks in every possible way.
Refs in Alabama = all calls go to Alabama. In all sports. That's how it works. Apparently the NCAA approves. You know the SEC Office does.

I agree about the Bama traveling no-calls, but traveling as a whole goes uncalled often these days (JOBIII travels damn near every time he makes a move to the basket. Sometimes it's called sometime it's not). Block/charge is always 50/50.
Fact is, outside of JOB LSU really didn't have another offensive threat. This team (on the road especially) has to create and knock down open looks from outside. If they don't they'll struggle. Plus, most teams even if they shoot poorly, will get 2nd chances against LSU due to the Tiger's lack of size down low. Coleman and JOB fight their asses off on the boards, but the fact is that Coleman is just outmanned and JOB can't do it alone. Going forward, I would like to see Hickey attack the basket more and create off his penetration

It seems that there are some common factors in our games. Even if we play good fundamental offense, we are still so behind on rebounds that we must force a lot of turnovers to make up for it.

This is definitely the case. With the size disparity down low, this has been a common factor. If LSU cannot get the turnovers forced, then they really struggle. LSU outshot Bama by percentage, but were outrebounded and did not force enough turnovers.
I think they come back and win both this week and go to .500 a week later than they should have. They are playing much better than they started the SEC play and know what they have to do. They MUST force turnovers. It gets the offense going, the defense going, and really sparks inspired play by the whole team.

I didn't catch the first half b/c I was in NOLA, but it sounded like Johnny played well. Glad to see him play strong down low. Obviously Bama got the calls as they shot close to twice as many free throws, but we still had an opportunity to win. Things are looking good for the future!

They actually shot closer to 3x the number of FTs, but LSU did try and foul at the end of the game.

I agreed with you until I started checking the stats. I was amazed to find that we are 4th in the SEC in team rebounding.
Whilst it's very encouraging that we now have 2 players in the top 10 rebounds per game (JOB is 5th, and Shavon is 9th) NO ONE else shows up on the list till Hickey at 46th (a guard for heaven's sake).
Some of those stats are obviously linked to amount of playing time a player gets (JOB is 4th in reb. per 40 mins played)
Those stats clearly paint the picture of how much we depend on JOB and Shavon - Johnny in particular.
I'm dreading him getting an injury.
We are more dismal at blocked shots. ADP is the highest LSU player at 12th! Shavon is 16th and JOB is all the way down at 33rd.
Take heart, I think we'll have a few players next year that will be in the 1-30th place zone.

This game wasn't entertaining I was pissed and I usually don't get upset at refs but I was beyond mad. Like the marquette game was good but this one was awful. The south Carolina and auburn and Georgia were straight up losses on our part but this one I think the refs got the loss and the win.

I'll offer my two cents in. Basketball in general has suffered from the slow movement away from the written rules. Certain "signature" moves are allowed fouls, travels, etc. are ignored is certain situations. It makes it extremely difficult to officiate and you get inconsistent results.
I would like to see basketball get back to the rules, but it would be painful to watch at first as players and coaches adapt. Plus you would have fans who show up to watch dunks and 3's screaming. to "Let the players play". Even in the last couple of games you had posters who both complained about the ref's blowing too many whistles and b) not calling the other team for a foul / travel.
