just finished Beasts of the Southern Wild

wow extremely impressed. this film is certainly deserving of the nominations it received. I have to admit that I went into it thinking it was likely silly that 9 year Quvenzhane Wallis (5-6 at the time it was filmed) had received an Oscar nomination for best lead actress, but she did an incredible job and had some very emotional scenes. Dwight Henry was also outstanding.
it blows me away that neither of them had ever acted in film or even television prior to this. unbelievable breakout performances.

Yeah, it's raw, real and visceral. Very well acted and it is suprising how natural it was.

For the movie or for the acting?
The movie was convoluted with too many attempts at making statements from Katrina to Global Warming to what the frick was up with the monsters? and that weird swimming out into the ocean? Seriously. WTF was that about?
The actors were phenomenal and the producer/director is going to make great movies in the future, but I am not in agreement with this movie being a "Best Movie" nominee.
Also, they filmed on some of our property and some of the crew lived in our camp during filming so our family is thanked in the credits which I thought was pretty cool.

It was the mind of a little girl. From that POV there could not have been concise political and social commentary. And that there would be some kind of fantastical connections to what was happening around her made sense given how young and impressionable she was.
Were there some real issues interwoven in there? Yes. But by the end of the film, they can't be taken as the goal of the film because the only goal of the film is for Hushpuppy to cope and survive in a messed up world.

I haven't seen it but really want to.
Saw a documentary about post Katrina New Orleans (I think) a few years ago and they showed the guys filming this. Looked like it would be B rate syfy movie I wouldn't be interested in.
But I'm really looking forward to watching it when I get the chance

It depends on what you read into it. I don't think it is really making a statement or political at all. It's more about growing up and change and losing a way of life. I've always liked Magical Realism and this movie captures that perfectly which is a rare thing.

Little Quvenzhane Wallis is superb in her role. I actually have her as the front-runner in my opinion for the Academy Award as Best Actress. I'm pretty sure that won't happen, but she definitely deserves serious consideration. I know a lot of her script is narration, but along with her acting and even her speaking parts, it's all both fascinating and believable.
I loved Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook, it's so close those two, but I really think this little girl should win. I'll be happy either way, though.
And, Wallis, at age five, had to lie about her age to audition for her very first acting job—the starring role in Beasts of the Southern Wild—because the minimum age to be considered was six. She eventually beat out some 4,000 contenders for the role of Hushpuppy.
She is currently 9 years old.

The only part I thought was political was the part where they took them to the shelter for their own good, and how Wink was fighting tooth and nail to resist their help. To me it was a perfect snap shot of how the human will and spirit is stronger than any authority figure; well intentioned or not.
Loved the movie.

I had a hard time understanding why anyone would fight to live in the bathtub.
But people tend to love where they come from...how else can you explain Falcon fans.
