I realize this board is 99% computer/console based gaming, but I'm wondering if there are a few like me who also play some of the more recent board games. Once you get beyond the Monopoly/Catch Phrase/Battleship facade, there are some incredible games out there.

My current top 5:

Game of Thrones
Risk on steroids, with all the intrigue of Westeros. Need all 5 players for full experience, but can get by with 3 or 4.

SW X-Wing Miniatures
Strictly two player. Different kind of game. Use templates to plot moves. Goal is simple - kill the other ships.

Lords of Waterdeep
Easy and fairly quick to play. All about resources and objectives. From D&D.

A Touch of Evil
Competitive or Co-op. A little thinking, a little strategy. Build your character's stats. Cool storyline.

Battlestar Galactica
Co-op, but at least one of you is a Cylon. Almost always ends badly for the humans, in a fun sort of way.

Catan
Carcassonne
Dominion (although not a board game)
Monopoly
Pit (again, a card game)

I'm interested in this thread though as I do love a good board game. I'd love to one day start and finish a game of Axis and Allies.

Thought about including card games too. You ever play Ascension? iPad has a great app for that one.

I have Catan on my list to try, and will add Carcassonne now as well.

I haven't, although it looks like one I would like. I'm waiting for the Dominion app to come out.

Thread's like this is why the gaming board has a bad rep.

Nice list.

Have you played the full Android game?

And I'll be darned if Small World doesn't have more pieces than any game I've ever played. Fun game, but putting it away is a chore.

Nah.

I like your list as well. Lords of Waterdeep is a good one that I just played a few times recently. Sometimes it's nice to jump into a simple, easy to learn game like that instead of getting caught up in the intense, ridiculously long games like Game of Thrones and Mage Knight.

I was about to start this thread. I've been trying to get away from the computer recently and board games were a much better option. Haven't touched a computer game in weeks thankfully.

Right now is tough:

Lords of the Waterdeep
Flash Point Fire Rescue
Last Night on Earth
Carcassonne
Ghost Stories

6th Battlestar Galactica, but I don't get to play it enough. Will probably try the solo option next week.

I've been back and forth on this one. Worth it?

How so?

I LOVE board games, especially Axis and ALlies. But it is god damn impossible to find the perfect 4 friends to play that game.

Really sucks. Maybe I should go rogue and head to some place around New ORleans where people will play. I'll make some strange new friends or something.

True. You just have to be creative. Find the right games to introduce to people. My girlfriend loves Lords of the Waterdeep. At some point, maybe War of the Ring or something.

I just needed to get away from the computer, ha. But I still needed some sort of strategy filler. Something to engage the brain.

I haven't gone that far with it yet. Haha.

I'm going to go slightly off topic here and boast a little, but my neighborhood in Seattle has the coolest game store ever. It's this massive board game store with a cafe/bar built in. They have a large game library that they lend out, and they'll open anything in the store for you to play with in the cafe for free.

The Penny Arcade guys, Wil Wheaton (when he's in town), Richard Garfield, and some other nerd-famous people hang out there.

Thread's like these are the least of our problems. This is actually kind of refreshing.
