Charleston SC and Houston/Katy TX "Quick" Reviews

My disclaimers:
- I don’t think my taste buds can discriminate the finer points of dining. Almost every top-end restaurant I’ve been to (Delmonico’s, La Provence, Ruth’s, et al) I’ve left underwhelmed.
- I’m a huge fan of seafood and Italian; not as familiar with steaks and BBQ (but trying to learn).
- My rule is that if it tastes good to me it’s good; and if it doesn’t it ain’t.
Charleston, SC
Jim & Nicks (catered lunch): Not a BBQ connoisseur but I really liked the brisket.
Water’s Edge (Mt. Pleasant) : In town for one night and this is where we were taken for dinner. The best I can say about the meal (crab cake appetizer and almond crusted grouper) is OK which was disappointing since Charleston supposedly has such a vibrant dining scene.
Houston/Katy Area
Taste of Texas (dinner): Had a crab cake appetizer (very good) and a rib-eye (their “Cowboy” steak). Great service and setting but was underwhelmed by the steak. BTW, great salad bar. The steaks I’ve cooked on my BGE were better. Not sure what I’m missing.
Pappas Bar-B-Q (lunch): had a sampler plate. Ribs were great. Beef and pulled pork were good. Jalapeño sausage was weird. Rest was ok.
Five Guys: fried and tastes like Wendy’s. Don’t plan to go back.
Chipotle: Only had a burrito but was very good. Would go again.
Rudy’s BBQ (lunch): Had wet brisket and sausage. Very good. Look forward to going back.
Cheddars (dinner with my kids): Kids liked it a lot (especially the butter croissants). Solid family restaurant.

I love the wet brisket at Rudy's and the sauce they sell.

Wow, well this was a fricking disappointing thread.
Jim & Nick's is a chain. Albeit not a terrible one. But frick man you're in Charleston, SC. You should have gone to a better establishment.
Pappas Bar-B-Q.. yet another chain. Way to branch out.
Five Guys and Chipotle are terrible. And don't you have these nearby where you live. They are national chains. Most do.
THE worst of all the chain restaurants. And that includes Applebee's, which it's pretty hard to get shittier than that.
yeah, we know.

Pretty sure Rudy's is a chain too but I don't care. When I'm in Houston Rudy's is a must.

Gatlin's is my spot, but there is just something about the moist brisket at Rudy's. I like to bring sauce back home too.

Ribs are ok. Good hot links. Everything else is average. Just like most BBQ in this city.

You really limited yourself to some widely known meh restaurants in two really amazing food cities. I wouldn't of even wasted the time to review them on here.
Did you come here asking for suggestions? Next time do that.

Cut the OP some slack he's from Slidell. Not everybody can eat at Michelin star restaurants every meal.

Glad to see Rudy's getting some love on here. I've read plenty of hate on it. It is a chain and not the best BBQ, but I would kill to have a BBQ joint that was half as good as Rudy's in SW louisiana.

They have a few of them in South Texas. I still haven't been but I'm sure I'll go soon.
