Free Agent Defensive Ends

we're talking a lot of Jordan, Ansah, Montgomery's, etc with a 1st Rd pick. That could change with a free agent signing. The Loomis magic for finding free agent money will be tested strongly. I'm thinking one impact free agent might be an optimistic goal.
If ya wanna use those bucks for THE most important need you sign a pass rusher. HERE is the PFF ranking of them for the 2012 season.
Note Michael Johnson who would be my first choice if he came in being not a full fledged bank buster.
Galette is #6 overall and the highest ranked RFA. Prolly will take a 2nd Rd tender
Freeney -0.5 and Osi 0.7 look like stop gap fillers at this pt in their careers. Would be good paired with someone like Ansah that might be a little slower out of the gate.
McBride sure ended up a disappointment for two years (-3.9)
Idonije might be an interesting player that can bring some pass rush playing inside or out

I'm setting my hopes in FA very low. I expect us to have a bit of a roster bloodbath and then to sign a few guys that are middle of the road vets or "diamond in the rough" longshots...and then try and get talent in the draft.
The money situation is just not in it for us this year.

My expectations are even lower this year than last concerning a A grade FA. Hope loomis makes me wrong again.
Was surprised to see Gallete that high. Looks like as you said a second round tender for junior this year is a lock.

Why is Avril listed so low at -11.6?

PFF simply scores every play. Avril still got the sacks but his overall play was limited in both snaps and performance by some nagging back problems. He'll still likely be the biggest dollar DE UFA IMO.

One guy who I think could be a really promising pick up would be DL Jason Jones from Seattle. I know he wants to be a DE, but perhaps with Spags, he can convince to be the 3-Tech we need.

not sounding like Johnson could even hit the market and would be too expensive if he did...
Longtime Bengals color analyst Dave Lapham fully expects free agent RE Michael Johnson to be back with the team in 2013.
Lapham is better-sourced than most local analysts. "I think they'll get Michael Johnson done," said Lapham. "If they have to (franchise) tag him, they have to tag him. He'll definitely be back." It's become evident that the Bengals view Johnson as a higher priority than fellow free agent RT Andre Smith. "There's going to be more than one team in the league that's going to offer him premiere right tackle money," Lapham said of Smith. "They have to decide if they want to match that kind of an offer or spend it elsewhere." Jan 14
Bengals.com considers free agent RE Michael Johnson "the leader in the clubhouse" to draw the franchise tag if there's no contract extension by March.
Overshadowed by Geno Atkins, Johnson played excellent run defense while racking up 11.5 sacks of his own. Turning 26 in February, Johnson would command a mega deal on the open market.

Has there been a Margus Hunt thread yet? Other than Ansah I don't think there is a DE with as much potential as him

yeah there was one after he dominated that bowl game vs. Fresno State
it wasn't a detailed one like the Dion Jordan thread though.

Teams just dont let young DE with talent walk away.
I believe with the castration of the def. secondary by the NFL to increase scoring the def line is now the premium position to aquire top tier talent.
Also tired of the Saints trying to pay on the cheap for cheap DL talent that dont pan out.
Would not be upset at all if we spent almost all of our pics in the draft on the D-line. No kidding.
Cheaper than over priced free agents and if we have a surplus of D line talent they would be worth a kings ransom in the new high scoring 5000 yards passing a year league.

Blues,
We all know that the draft and, to a lesser extent, FA market can both be risky propositions. The defense plays like it's devoid of any talent and, yet, the team has expended a number of high draft picks on that side of the ball over the last few years. I'm pointing this out because we've gone to the "He has great upside" well too many times (Jenkins and Robinson are the poster boys here).
If we're not convinced a player can in a give immediate help, don't use a 1st rounder on him. Today's NFL isn't a place for "on the job training" when you have the 15th pick. Considering the lack of success with our 1st round selections lately, maybe they should trade down and get extra picks...Loomis seems to do better with picking later rather than sooner!

I'm pretty sure the Saints FO thought these guys would be playmakers right away though.

If Johnson isn't available or affordable along with Avril, surely being too spendy... in that case I wouldn't mind a one or two year affordable deal for a Freeney or Osi type of stop gap filler for a year. That sort of FA could enable picking someone like Dion Jordan or Ansah that may not be fully ready to step into 4-3 three down roll immediately.
As goat said tho, at this point could we have too much defensive line? How puny the front has been for so long I wouldn't mind a 1st & 3rd (or 2nd if back) devoted to it. Kinda like the Bucs in 2010 & 2011... they went DT-DT then DE-DE 1st-2nd Rds in consecutive years. Do a Ansah or Montgomery, then do a Okafor or Gholston in the 3rd Rd.

This.
If we get enough d-ends, we're bound to get one that can get to the QB right?

and it proved worthy. #1 ranked run defence, too bad their passing defence was horrible.

I think their run defense rank was more the result of how bad the pass d was. That is, they had the 3rd fewest rushes attempted against them. Why? No need to. They gave up more yards passing than the Saints! They moved Barber from CB, got rid of Talib, and free agent signing Eric Wright was a considerable flop. I put a CB to them in my first mock cuz of this.

I bet Osi ends up here. Just a feeling.

adding Walter Football DEs Rankings
I read some of these and say, yeah, we were right...
#9 Junior Galette (RFA), DE, Saints. Age: 25.
Junior Galette is a solid situational pass-rusher who should have seen more action last year.
Yes, he was injured for a while but still didn't see the reps I thought he deserved. After playoff elimination I could have done without hardly any Ellis & Will Smith and let Hicks and Galette (and Tez Wilson) get some quality learning snaps.

Disagree.
At this point I want the best DE on the board with our first pick. The one who can contribute the most right away. While these projects can turn out to be great, we don't have years to be wasting. We need to bolster this defense yesterday while Drew is still in his prime.
