He is an awesome arse director. He's played in some terrible movies with terrible roles, but he's not the worst actor ever. He's getting better.

1) Ben Affleck was probably the best sub 40 director out there, and easily Top 15-20 out of everyone.

2) That all three previous movies revealed a ton of talent behind the camera and a very classical approach to cinema.

3) That Argo would be awesome.

I own every movie he's directed so far and plan to purchase Argo shortly, loved that movie. He is the damn man behind the camera. I also think he's matured quite a bit as an actor, but he's got ridiculous potential as a director.

I don't know how to explain this in the correct terms as I've never taken any movie classes or whatnot, but every one of his movies just has the right feel to it. He really seems to focus on the environment and making it a part of his movies, and I really like that. I also think the dialogue in his movies (I don't know if the director has control of that or not) has been awesome.

That may be true. I guess I'm just a huge non movie snob. I like some stuff like that (I like National Treasure, Gone in 60 seconds, and Avatar). But I also like very well done, deep films as well. I just want to be entertained usually when I go to a movie; if I want to learn something I'll look it up or watch a documentary. I don't think that says anything positive or negative about me; I understand these movies aren't deep, don't have some big message (well Avatar tried to have one) and are unrealistic. I just don't know why that means I shouldn't like them or that I'm stupid for liking them
fair enough. I have brilliant friends who watch movies that I, and most people on this board would consider trash. It's not an intelligence thing. Some people view movies as a very legitimate form of art and expression and are offended by nick cage and Michael bay. Some people, not necessarily dumb, like to just throw back some popcorn and be entertained. It's a very different movie watching philosophy.

Also music critics would probably say I listen to trash music. I would call them snobs. Different strokes.

Leonardo DiCaprio says get in line. Afflecks number of snubs is like 15 times behind Leonardo's.

If Affleck was getting snubbed for acting, I'd agree with you.

I don't think he's getting snubbed. Let's see if he can keep it going or if he is just a flash in the pan when it comes to directing. I think he is great behind the camera and will get his due with two or three more films. He is honing his skills right now, like all great directors. Look how long it took Scorsese to win.

The not getting nominated is strange, but then why nominate someone who is not going to win I guess?

And Tarantino not being nominated is not a big deal for me. While good, Django was pretty much Inglorious Bastards set in slavery period. Great film, but not his best. He'll win one for his body of work eventually, but he needs a fresh approach to win for a specific film. Not knocking him, so don't flame me.

re: Will Ben Affleck ever get any respect?

I think he can be a pretty solid actor in the right roles.

He plays an excellent a-hole in Dazed and Confused and Mallrats for example.

Some other movies I thought he did a good job in were Good Will Hunting, The Town, Shakespeare in Love, Boiler Room, Changing Lanes, and Hollywoodland.

haven't seen Argo yet but everyone I know that saw it thought it was pretty good.

I think he just has been in a few high profile misses that have unfairly tainted peoples opinion of him.
