No Katheyn Bigelow, no Ben Affleck, and no Tom Hooper in Directing. Surprised by that.

Yep. Lincoln is pretty much your Best Picture winner.

Joaquin Phoenix got nominated though. I was happy to see that.

Weird nominations. They really loved Beasts and Life of Pi. A little surprised.

How many awards nominations do you think The Turin Horse will ultimately get? I say zero.

I'm surprised Rise of the Guardians didn't get nominated for animated picture. I've only seen Pirates on the list and it was kind of dumb and not really anything spectacular.

My wife didn't have much good to say about Les Mis but I guess she is in the minority.

So Adapted Screenplay is where it came from a book and Original Screenplay is just the movie? Basically an award for dialogue?

That is sometimes true, especially for Adapted Screenplay. The Coen Brothers won Best Adapted Screenplay for their work with No Country For Old Men. Basically, one of them held the novel open and read while the other typed it into screenplay format on Final Draft. Paul Thomas Anderson should have won the Oscar for adapting Upton Sinclair's book "Oil!" into "There Will Be Blood".

The screenplay awards can generally be for the movies people actually might like whereas the Best Picture nods are the snooty tooty Oscar bait movies

It's not fair that any of the Best Supporting Actor nominees should lose; all of them are worthy of the award IMO. What a tough choice for voters! I'd probably narrow it down to Hoffman/Jones, but I don't know who I'd pick between those two.

The only category for which I've seen all the nominees.
