I've never found baseball fans to be pretentious. The game involves more history and more statistical analysis than other sports but I don't see why noting that would be pretentious.
Re: statistics, I know a HS baseball coach here who showed me his computer files on his own teams' tendencies. He can bring up Johnny's batting average when he's behind in the count against a lefty pitching out of the stretch. I said "Why don't you throw the wind and temperature conditions in there, too."

its baseball and its not even close. You don't hear about tarnished legacies and sports writers don't control history in soccer. I love baseball but the hardcore baseball fans are absolutely more pretentious.
