Instead of getting the bicycle and/or .22 rifle he really wanted for his birthday, 11 year old Elvis Presley received his first guitar from his mother, Gladys. The rest, of course, is history.

sure he made race music acceptable to the masses. Elvis is the most overrated musician in history.

I know why you say it, but on the other hand, why does someone have to always say this? For the reasons you state alone he is iconic. Most artists WOULDN'T do this kind of music in the segregated society of the 50's. He did.

And he was a damn good singer.

Became a parody of himself later in life, but still "The King".

This is some stupid bull crap that started around the 90's and most black people just accept it as fact. I swear everytime I mention Elvis when in a conversation with a black dude, I hear this same mess.

Yes, Elvis did play "black" music in a slightly different style and made it more appealing to white audiences. but it was just one part of his repertoire. He also played country & western, blues and gospel. His only two grammys were for Gospel albums.

Elvis flipped the script on music and set the stage for the 60's. There is no overrating what the 60's were to music.

By the way, "Hound Dog", one of the "black" songs he sang, was written by two Jewish white guys.

I like his Christmas album but not a huge fan of his other stuff. He was just a pop entertainer, but was influential nonetheless.

"That's All Right Mama"

Original version by Arthur Crudup (1946)

A straight country version by Marty Robbins (Dec 1954)

Elvis' version (July 1954)

Elvis' version isn't R&B and it isn't country. It's a new form.
