Defense was garbage after the Alabama loss because 7 JRs decided to go Pro?

From the last drive of the Alabama game till the end of the Chick-Fil-A bowl, the defense was horrible. Could it be because the 7 JRs that are either going pro or are considering it just didn't have much left to play for or because they were trying to protect their future?

If LSU holds on and wins that game, do we see inspired play the rest of the way and improvement instead of regression on the team? I think so. Their goals were gone, the team was spent, and they realized that all they had worked for since 1/9/12 was lost.

It is a wonder that we won the last 3 games the way we did and almost beat Clemson, actually.

The team next year will be super talented and very hungry even though they are inexperienced. They will make mistakes, but they will be fun to watch. I am actually getting excited about a new era of LSU football!

The defense was totally different the last 4 games than it was the first 9 games after there was nothing left to play for. No one can deny that.

Now, we see up to 7 JRs going pro. Coincidence?

Since Saban's been at Bama, there's no doubt the outcome of that game directly affects the rest of the season.

After wins in '07, '10 and '11 the team played at a high level the remainder of the year. They didn't win every game obviously, but there wasn't a noticeable dropoff.

After the losses in '08, '09 and this year, they basically just mailed it in. Whether that's b/c how they felt losing to Alabama, or b/c those losses ended all chances of NC and SEC championships, I don't know. Probably a combination of both.

The players, fans, coaches, and media all made 2012 a NCG or Bust season before it began, after Bama everyone involved was just playing out the string.

The air was just totally let out of the balloon after that game on all fronts.

NC was out of the window at that point. Everyone knows its a one game season with Bama these days and that killed the hopes.

I disagree. Kevin Minter and Sam Montgomery left it all on the field every game. Bennie Logan showed a lot of heart too at the end of the season. Eric Reid and Keke Mingo played hurt for most of the season. And I fully believe Tharold Simon is going pro because of his personal responsibilities.

nah. this defense had issues before then. they gave up late game touchdown drive to south carolina & texas a&m. the only thing that kept them from probably losing those games was the opponent didn't get the onside kick.

True, but we had 2 score leads in those games and they were good teams who were desperate. You can't hold good teams down the entire game.

Clemson wanted that game way more than LSU did too, which was obvious.

I see all of the other problems and I am not trying to make excuses. I am just saying that the defense had a noticeable drop off at the tail end of the season.

I don't think their less inspired play had anything to do with them going to the draft.

I think it had more to do with being out of the hunt for the SEC/BCS championship and the season taking it's toll physically.

I can see that.

Also the young DB play that was green early in the year, then wrenched up for the middle of the year(especially vs ATM, USCe), was loosened back up again from the Bama final drive onto season's end.

Yeah, the young DBs seemed to hit a freshman wall or something. They will get better.

Tharold Simon just kept getting worse, though. He will not be missed. Really, I am okay with losing the guys in the secondary. It is Minter that I will miss the most. And, Montgomery.

The defense just wasn't as good as it was supposed to be all year. It wasn't as noticeable because we were playing inferior talent but we let North Texas, Idaho and Towson especially move the ball way too easily.

With the loss of Claiborne, Mathieu and Taylor, I think Simon, Loston and even Reid were exposed as being overrated. Oh they had their moments but overall other teams passed effectively against us.

The defensive line was okay but nowhere near where they had been with Brockers in there. Thank the lord for Minter and the other linebackers. They were better or we would have really been in trouble.

So I don't think it was a lack of effort. It was really a much bigger drop in talent than we originally thought.

I don't know about you, but I don't think it's fun at all watching "Mistakes" on either side of the ball. I have fun when the Tigers are beating the hell out of their opponent with minimal mistakes.
