Spent a few days outside of the city as well but I did hit up a few places I haven't been before. I'll leave reviews and some food porn later if people would like.

My favorite of the trip was Root.

The only other pricier place I went to was MiLa. It was pretty solid but I have some gripe with the service for a place that charges what they charge.

I love this place. I love that New Orleans is getting places like this and they are doing very well.

I can't wait for Square Root.

Root was probably a top 5 dining experience for me in the city of New Orleans (not just on the trip, ever)

MiLa could have been a lot better. I'll complain later. Let's just say I don't like being rushed at a restaurant with their prices when I'm seated 90 minutes before the advertised closing time.

There is a reason the restaurant was empty

haven't enjoyed my dinners at Root outside of the charcuterie offerings.

To be fair I did order a shite load of that stuff so that may be why I enjoyed the dinner so much

I also liked the Pumpkin Shmumpkin dessert

The Goat Box Entree was flavorful but it was almost too much flavor after a while if that makes any sense at all. I preferred the more subtle flavored gnochi dish as an entree. I'm looking forward to going back. Was pretty pissed they didn't have the smoked marrow bones.

Actually 3 things I ordered they didn't have, but I still enjoyed my time there.

They are just inconsistent with their entrees. Like, basic cooking methods. I had the worse lobster dish I've ever eaten at Root. It was the texture of a shoe sole. Also the gimmicky scallop in cigar box dish, while unique, couldn't make up for the poorly cooked scallops or unbalanced seasoning. I had the Black Tea Smoked Yard Bird there once and it was fricking horrendous. The black tea sauce was the color of burnt motor oil and tasted as such. I rarely complain to servers about food but I brought it up and he admitted the problem was the kitchen brewed the tea about 5 hours earlier and continued to use it all night. He removed that from the bill.

I read the menu at Root this summer...on the door. Hope they can pull it off, but I chose elsewhere. It didn't draw me in.

that's interesting. I hear different things from people about how busy they are. the three times I've been there hasn't been more than 5 tables occupied in the place. but I hear that it sometimes gets really packed. what day of the week and time did you go?

Sunday for 730 or 8. It was full other than 2 tables, one of which was our reserved table and the other that got sat immediately after us.

While I'm at it, some pics for those that might be interested. These are all from Root.

well not the best sample size considering it's the weekend between Christmas and New Year's plus you have the Sugar Bowl crowd. I doubt they are on the brink of closing or anything though like some suggest.

They certainly look pretty. Just wish they were executed better. Those oysters with the foam were alright. Dessert looks delicious.

Now let's compare that with my experience at MiLa

Place was about 25% capacity when I walked in at 820. The advertised closing time was 10. I ordered some apps and wine and was told a little before 9 that I needed to order because the kitchen was closing down.

frick that place

Some of those plates look nice and tight. But most look jumbled and sloppy IMO.

The Pumpkin dessert was fantastic. I didn't taste the Lemon themed one.

Those pics definitely don't do the presentation of the dishes justice. I don't like to be popping off flashes in a place like that. I think it's a bit on the tacky side.

Well I mean the first two were the charcuterie board and the turnip salad

Here is another angle of the board

I'll add this piece of advice: if you're interested in ordering sausage, just order it with all the charcuterie stuff because they serve it on the same board with the same pickled vegetables and fruits. It made for a rather redundant presentation and had I known that I would have just ordered the sausage at the same time.

Never been to MiLA or ever really heard much about it so I can't speak to that place.
