The safe pick (Luke Joeckel, Sam Montgomery or Matt Elam)

or

The homerun pick (Dion Jordan, Barkevious Mingo, Ezekiel Ansah or Margus Hunt)

Lets say these are the guys available when we pick. Do you go for the "safe pick" or "boom or bust pick"?

I think we have enough "solid" players and need a playmaker on defense, so I want a homerun and will gamble on a pass rusher.

I think he'll be gone but if I could have any I'd prolly go Damonte Mooe Texas AM. He has as much sudden burst as a speed rusher as any. His overall game and track record makes him very low risk if any. If parked at #15 to 17 I wouldn't even mind a trade up to #12ish to get him if need be. (That would= 2014 2nd Rd)

I can go riskier too. More so tho, want a guy with expectation to come in as a day one starter- not a project type that may take a while to develop. Will Smith out after 9 years and 139 games and his replacement comes in as a defensive cornerstone for the next 9-10 years.

Just one free agent and one draft pick like that I am convinced could turn the signs of a good defense we have seen in the second half of the season into steady sustained improvement to being average to better by overall NFL standards.

Said it before, look at Houston 2010 to 2011. 29th in total defense and 24th in scoring defense. They get a new DC & scheme, let go of their most established defensive star, add two solid free agents for needs (Manning, Joseph), and draft the kinda high impact player I'm talking about (Watt) Result? 2011- 2nd in total defense & 4th in scoring defense.

A defensive player who actually plays like a first round pick

He's not available in this hypo. Neither is Jones or Werner. Who you going with blues?

That sounds like more of the safe pick. As I've said before, Sam Montgomery is probably the next Will Smith. But I think we have that in Cam Jordan. We need someone who can rush the passer. A Joe Johnson or L'Roi Glover. (yes I know one is a DE and the other is a DT) I just think we need a playmaker.

Is a solid guy going to be that impact player or do you need to take a chance? (a-la Bruce Irvin)

Jesse Williams and Akiem Hicks would do wonders for our Run D.

out of the names you put Joeckel. He is by far the highest rated, could be the #1. That said, I'd bet money today he won't go past #5.

Jordan, Mingo, or Ansah after that. I don't really have a firm opinion of them to rank them yet.

obviously the first option is the best if available. At the time drafted Watt was considered the way safe pick but with some limited upside. That turned out wrong. Ryan Kerrigan very similar even tho not as slam bang on the returns as Watt yet.

No prob with the higher risk/higher return scenario. I just don't have the insight to declare Hunt, Mingo, or the likes as the risk to take. If they do I'll be excited, just not the first choice/ideal scenario.

My preference of the players given:
Joeckel, Mingo, Ansah, Montgomery, Jordan, Hunt, Elam.

I prefer Joeckel because our top 3 OTs are free agents over this offseason and next off season. Mingo second because he has good speed and experience playing against good competition. Ansah next because he has great measurables and seems like a player that can grow into a great pass rusher.

Montgomery seems like Will Smith and I think he's a little out of place in Spag's system. Jordan seems more built as a 3-4 rush OLB than a DE for Spag's system and we don't really need a safety in the first round so that rules out Elam.

I would say HUNT in the first round.

It would also be nice to get honey badger somewhere in the 4th round. That would add 2 solid defenders and honey badger could even be used on special teams

Wait are people really discussing drafting Joeckel with our middle of the first round pick?

Lol at even entertaining the option of taking Joeckel, Moore, or Werner.

Joeckel won't make it past wherever Philly drafts, if not before.

Mingo, Ansah, Lewan are more likely candidates. Maybe one of the LBs or even a WR as a dark horse

He gave the players and I gave my opinions on the order in which I would prefer them.

I'd expect Jake Matthews or Taylor to be a more realistic target at OT if he declares for the draft given the Saints record.

looking back the last 10 years, this is who we drafted in the first round:

Cameron Jordan- 2011 #24 overall

Patrick Robinson-2010 #32 overall

Malcom Jenkins- 2009 #14 overall

Sedrick Ellis- 2008 #7 overall(traded up from #10)

Will Smith- 2004 #18 overall

Jonathon Sullivan- 2003 #6 overall (traded 2 1st rounds picks #'s 17&18 to move up to take him) Horrible.

Charles Grant- 2002 #25 overall

Smith and Grant were a lot more productive out of the gate then the rest of these guys. Just hope we don't trade up for a DT again, both of those moves from before haven't returned much. Ellis was okay at first but he has faded off the last couple of seasons.
