Question about registering a pistol

I have a .22 revolver that my dad wants to give to me. However he got it from a previous marriage. We don't necessarily know the story of the gun. (it could be stolen)I've contacted the local sheriffs office and the woman I spoke with wasn't very helpful. Any suggestions on what i should do? I don't want to get caught with it and come to find it the previous owner had stolen it or some shite.

No need to register.
If the sheriff calls back tell them they got the wrong number.

Just take the pistol and keep your mouth closed. The less big brother knows the better

We are like 80% sure the gun is stolen. What would happen if i was caught with the gun? That is the only reason i'm worried.

If its a stolen weapon they will confiscate it, and then they will rape you on the side of the road, without the possibility of lube.
If your not on the side fo the road they will bring you to the side of the road.
ETA: on second thought, you better not take that gun. Let me know where to meet him and I'll take it from your dad to dispose of properly

If you believe you are in possession of a stolen firearm (or anything) contact local law enforcement and tell them you think you have a stolen gun, not that you are asking about registration. Follow their instructions and their will be questions for all involved
Or just keep your mouth shut and dispose of gun

There is no place to register the gun even if you wanted to. IF you get stopped with it and it was stolen you would have a lot of questions to answer but if you have answers you should be ok. If you have a friend that is a cop have them run the numbers...

How would you get caught?
Don't rob banks or shoot people with it and all will be good.

Sounds like a gun a "guy I know" bought for cash from a Mr. J. Doe.

Get cdaniel pics of the gun and he will track down the rightful owners.
