What optic are you looking at?
Just watched a lot of videos on the topic recently, and I'm starting to believe the opinion that a reticle is superior to standard iron sites.
Plus, they're way more fun in the video games I've played.

Well, a magnified optic is surely better at many things over irons. Red dots also have there place.
What are you looking to use this rifle for?

Just for fun. Plinking.
Hopefully never for a Zombie attack, but it wouldn't hurt.

How far?
within 100 yards, I would go Red dot or Irons.
past 100 yards I would go scope
100-300 2-7,1-6 or 1-4
300+ 3-9x
if you do a mildot scope get mrad turrets. If you do a BDC reticle just got with MOA.

Perhaps you should leave the rifle as is. Shoot with the irons until you are proficient with them. Next, once you have experience with AR type rifles you can start to tailor the rifle to fit your needs and uses.

I'm not planning on heading to the middle east or doing any urban tactical missions.

Irons and red dots are truly two different animals.

You may end up using the AR to hunt varmint, hogs, or something else. Maybe use it for home defense. Maybe end up using it for putting holes in paper at 600yds. You could use it in 3 gun comps or something else. So, based on just these options the AR can be set up countless ways that fit your needs best. Completely apart from any fantasy urban tactical bullshite.
Some examples:
3 gun
Home Defense
High Power
Varmint AR
Your Plinker
And the list of setups and uses goes on and on.
Posted on 9/29/14 at 2:13 pm to H.M. Murdock
that home defense setup tho

The only constant between the two for becoming proficient in practice. They are two completely different sighting systems with different capabilities and so on. To say they are the same is uniformed.

The only way to become proficient is practice.
To insinuate that I was not aware that the two systems are different is disingenuous.
