re: LHSAA talk spin-off thread- Coming soon Parish Rankings

If we measure it strictly by prospect production, Caddo would be pretty high. Quality of teams? Different story. The city had to basically put together a select team -- Evangel -- to be able to make up for the fact that it couldn't compete with Monroe on the field.

If a Shreveport team could ever get past the second round of the playoffs -- back before seeding and when the Monroe teams would manhandle Shreveport out of the playoffs by round 2 every year -- the whole idea of an Evangel probably never happens.

To me, it's almost a demerit for greater New Orleans and Shreveport to have these recruiting programs sort of propping up their results over the years. Until very recently, Orleans Parish public schools never made deep playoff runs and Jefferson Parish public schools still don't. All the talent, and all the football emphasis, has usually been concentrated in a couple of private schools.

To me, you're a better football city when you are like Monroe and four of the eight schools in the immediate area (West Monroe, Neville, Ouachita and Ouachita Christian) are legit powers in their classes. Carrol, Wossman, St. Fred's and Richwood aren't, but when half of your teams are considered to be legit state title contenders, that's what stands out.

In Lafayette, in most years, Acadiana, Carencro, STM and Teurlings are usually really good while Northside is meh and Lafayette and Comeaux are bad. Extend it out and Breaux Bridge is usually fairly strong and usually maybe one more team out of that district is pretty fair. Again, like Monroe, it's the number of schools that have quality teams.

As opposed to Jeferson where Rummel and Curtis were good, East Jeff was decent, but Bonnabel, Riverdale, Grace King, Country Day, Crescent City, Ridgewood and St. Martin's are all pretty weak. Not meh, but weak. You're batting maybe .300 in the number of programs that are competitive at a decent level, compared to Monroe where half the teams are powers.

Don't know what were using, football mainly.
Each corner of the state has it's mainstays.

I don't think anyone can argue with Ouachita being #1.

I was going to list them, Ruston always has good success.

It's about how many mainstays you have per capita. In Lafayette Parish, I'd say four of the eight programs are considered strong and Acadiana borders on being an "elite" program, though not quite there. Compare that to Jefferson Parish, where Rummel and Curtis are elite, East Jeff and West Jeff were decent but the other seven East Bank schools and Helen Cox, Shaw, Ehret and Higgins were all meh to bad. So four out of 15 teams -- unless I'm missing one -- are good.

That's a little better than a .250 average. Not very good. Lafayette is much better across-the-board.

Now, I'd give Jefferson Parish a slight pass this year because Rummel and Curtis both won their classes and Curtis was exceptional. But when 11 of your 15 football-playing schools aren't good, that isn't strong to me.

No it isn't, and for this area I think it gets a higher ranking because of the talent that comes from here more so than W's or titles.

I would not even know where to look... Google wasn't too big of a help.

I am assuming that these were all black public schools?

I started this with the idea of doing a power ranking kinda thing. 45 years ago shouldn't count but we can make a note of the history of it all.

Baton Rouge produces players more than teams. Catholic has a good quarterfinal type program most years. Zachary, Central, Scotlandville and Denham have good programs, but usually you can count on them being done by Thanksgiving. And don't get me started on Dutchtown. And, if not for Lutcher being in the district, this would probably be the weakest 4A district in the state. Maybe Plaquemine will improve it, but EBR is so anti-athletics with their higher academic requirements and coaching staff limits, they may never win another state title from the public schools here. Maybe Zachary and Central or if Woodlawn breaks off into an ISD

Uh, Parkview Baptist says hey. The only football powerhouse in Baton Rouge.

Parkview is legit. But you've got the state's second largest metro and it can't compete for titles in either of the two biggest enrollment classes. Lafayette has a 5A team in the state finals pretty much every year (including Barbe and Sulphur out of that district). So Lafayette>EBR
