How long before we have openly gay male professional athletes?

With homosexuality becoming more and more acceptable it seems to be only a matter of time. There have already been pro athletes that have come out as gay after their careers, and there are plenty of openly gay female athletes. Statistics alone say there are a number of homosexuals in professional sports now but are just not open about it. But with it becoming comepletely acceptable in society, how much longer before we have an openly gay pro male athlete?

people act like there are plenty of gays in sports and the thing is simply that there just arent IMO. and the reason is obvious. gay people dont play sports as much as straight people do. even gay kids that are good at sports and like them probably quit at a young age because they feel like they dont fit in. it's a straight culture.
it will happen at some point and there will be a couple every now and then, but that's probably it.

Well since gays have attached themselves with minorities, there is really nothing taboo about being gay these days. Its all about living for yourself - "do you" (or another dude). I'm sure that when the first one comes out it will be celebrated and will lead to more down the road.
Just weird to me how in the last 12 or so years gays have gone from being hated (don't agree with) to being celebrated (don't agree with).

You didn't hear about the boxer who came out?

Don't see it anytime soon. Sports is a macho culture so gay athletes are going to stay in the closet.

I agree there are not as many gay people in (male) sports as in other parts of society; but there still are some. And just 5-10 years ago coming out may have seriously hurt or even ruined their careers, but now that's not the case. Hell if they're just a league minimum type guy it would probably greatly help their career

You'd probably lose some fans who wouldn't want to be presumed gay as well

I'm all for it personally, I dk why people freak so much with gay people in the first place. I agree with the guy earlier who said he was against people bashing gays and against the new trend of acting like they're heroes for being gay. The sooner we get to where everybody realizes they gould accept them as just people, the sooner all the gay rights people will stop with the excessive gay worship IMO

When Hollywood types like John Travolta, Jamie Fox, Will Smith, Tom Crusie, and Justin Bieber feel comfortable doing it.
Until then...it isn't going to happen. So much of a professional athlete is image.
Does Tebow think he is fooling people?

Don't really think its that widely accepted in the sporting world. I could see a baseball player but basketball no, and football hell no
