I personally think voting is a bigger responsibility than being able to buy a beer. That's just me though.

In a related story, a majority of "conservative" voters want bigger government.

It has to do with their schooling/parenting/society. Statism is a religion and most people are brainwashed into believing in it at a young age. The fun thing is that facts and logical arguments will do nothing but get them to hold on to their belief in the greatness of big government even more.

Also funny that most people in the thread are complaining since most people on the Poli Board want bigger government.

not surprising. i'd bet most of them don't even know what bigger goverment means. we need to raise the voting age, it's not the 1970s anymore. most 18 or 19 year olds aren't going into the workforce and starting a family. they have no skin in the game so they can vote on bull shite issues. raise the voting age to 21. this is coming from someone only a year removed from college.

Bingo.

Neither modern liberals nor modern conservatives have ideologies that are logically sound. Both employ their own version of a utilitarian calculus where they want government to enforce their chosen beliefs on others. Both want bigger government. They merely quibble over what they want that bigger government to do.

Well, since I've been the workforce 15 more years than you, and I've paid more taxes, my vote should count 5 times more than yours.

You really don't want amount of taxes paid being the value given to votes. That would be bad for dems.

I'm 20 and I don't want the government in any part of my life (social and fiscal). I'm pretty sure most of my friends feel the same way too.

We might take it more seriously if our vote actually counted.

Which is actually why I can't believe that young people aren't conservative.

The odds that the goodies of today will be there in anything vaguely resembling the same form for the typical 25 year old are virtually nil. Basically, your typical 25 year old is looking down the barrel of hitting his prime earning years in about a decade and owing a HUGE fricking bill on prior goodies while the promises to him shrink proportionally.

The ONLY rational reaction to that reality SHOULD be to be in full on rebellion mode towards big govt. And yet, instead, young people seemingly WANT to be lied to. They WANT people to tell them the gravy train will continue long enough for them to get in on it.

This is why I say that I almost understand why people my age are wary of govt cuts. They worry that they wont have time to react and they planned on things as they were.

Young people should have no delusions about that being the case for them. For young people, the only real discussion is how big a bill are they going to be left because the goodies are going to shrink no matter how many Democrats claim they wont.

This is because most people do not recognize that govt is VERY effective at applying power over you economically and USING power to control you personally in many areas. Meanwhile, govt attempts at controlling you personally are often exceedingly ineffective.

For example. Most states had laws on the books regarding myriad sexual practices. What percentage of the people do you figure adhered to those laws? How many got in trouble for these violations? Russia tried to quash religion. FAILED

But, if you are reliant upon the govt for your livelihood, it becomes much easier for govt to control you in many areas. And, govt can use the fact it supports you to justify tons of shite to include keeping you from being able to buy a fricking Soda bigger than a certain size.

Govt USES economic power to corral people into certain behaviors lest they be punished. Yet, most people think the two forms of control are unattached. This is naive.

Dammit. If only the American public was as bright and insightful (not to mention as hard working, principled and true believers in the Constitution and the "real" America) as our typical PoliBoard poster. Crying shame, I tell you.

The average voter in this generation of people coming of age has no clue what they want, no sense of themselves, and are desperately seeking an identity to call their own. Take a look at the kids, because that's what they are, surrounding the occupy Wall Street movement as a guide. Mad as hell, but they can't really say who they are mad at any why. They don't make any sense when they open their mouths. Truthfully, I think it's their un-engaged parents that is at the heart of all their frustrations, but still, like Clint Eastwood said, "when you go far enough to the right you meet the same idiots coming around from the left."

Yeah, this is where you go full retard. Yes, we're young and don't have the world experience but we do have a higher number of college grads. Many young vote liberal because the right is so adamant about prolife and things of that nature. Seriously, if the right just gave up the harsh social views shtick, most young people would probably vote for them.

Young people vote liberal because they do not understand how it works. Yes, free health care, free abortions, free birth control, etc.. sounds great to young people.. But when they get out in the real world, they begin to realize they're the ones being taxed so other people don't have to work or take any responsibility for themselves.

Most young people are not independent. They want bigger government because they still have a dependency mentality. Most do not know what it's like to be completely on your own.

As long as the private sector remains the driver (which it's losing ground), then people will come to realize government inefficiencies. But the bigger the government gets, the harder it is to turn around.
