UPDATE: ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that the Yankees never made Martin an offer. In fact, they haven’t made an offer to any position players so far this offseason.

8:44 PM: David Waldstein of the New York Times reports that Martin agreed to a two-year, $17 million deal with the Pirates. You could understand if the Yankees balked at a three-year deal at $8.5 million AAV, but it’s surprising that they weren’t willing to match the Pirates for two years.

Also Yankees signed Mo to a 1 year 10 million dollar deal today

I don't like it, but I can live with it instead of 3/$25M like rumored

That is an embarrassing move. Should've just played McHenry

A catcher who draws walks and hits for power.

Seems like a solid signing for a team that needed a catcher.

Hard for me to see how this team is going to compete to win the East this year. Martin was as solid a backstop as you can find, granted his line was horrible.

The Front Office is more concerned with padding their pockets with this 2014 deadline approaching, than putting the talent on the field.

I did not like most of the moves The Boss made, but I can say this, the offseason would be a little more substantive if he were still around.

I can't wait to see what the Yankees do at catcher. Gary Sanchez still 3 years away at least, and will likely never see real pinstripes.

The Romine back injury really put the organization behind as far as developing a MLB ready catcher. I think they trade for a low priced catcher or a guy with only a yr left on contract. They are getting below the tax hit line by 14 no matter the product on the field. I don't think the move is about lining their pockets but keeping their money from other organizations.

[quote]Russell Martin said the Yankees told him they didn't have the money available to match Pittsburgh's two-year/$17MM offer, reports David Waldstein of the New York Times. The Yankees didn't make Martin an offer and have yet to make any offers to position players this offseason, reports ESPN's Buster Olney (both links are to Twitter). Read more at LINK ]
