I love sci-fi, comic books, espionage, and action movies, but I can't get excited for the Hobbit. I enjoyed LOTR trilogy, but I could not in any way watch Game of Thrones. I just don't like that niche with elves and Old Englishness. My definition of hell would be to go to a Renaissance Fair and look at hipppies while listening to some freak play Greensleeves. Plenty geeky in my own right, but this is one no-go area for me. What's yours? Where do you draw the line?

I'll watch anything with a good story line. Can not watch reality TV. (Survivor, American Idol, Honey booboo.)

Love shows like CSI, The Mentalist, Game of Thrones, Raising Hope. I could go on.

And there are no elves in Game of Thrones.

I'll watch just about any show once to give it a try, but I loathe reality shows, save for The Amazing Race type shows, but even those I won't actually go out of my way to watch. Seriously though, I'll watching everything from Anime to anything sports related. I rarely watch movies anymore, I'd rather watch a few episodes of a tv-show than watch a movie these days.

I literally almost started this exact thread a couple weeks ago.

I'm not real big on sci-fi, but if it's well done I'll appreciate it, like BSG for tv or Ender's Game for books.

I will watch pretty much anything having to do with comic books and recently started reading them again. Even animated stuff. I'm more into Marvel than DC though. Other than Batman live action movies, I've just never been that into DC. Though I am really liking Arrow.

I'm a comedy snob. There isn't a particular brand of comedy I like more than any other, but it can't be lazy. Whether it's standup, sitcom, or movie, just try.

I think I agree with you on the GOT/Ren fair stuff.

Point taken. I am still not interested. The genre and setting just doesn't hold my interest.

My tastes run similar to yours. I like sci-fi, action, psychological thrillers, comic-book stuff, etc, but I cannot get into fantasy.

LOTR left me pretty cold (I watched all three, but only once each) and I never got all the fuss about Harry Potter (I *think* I saw all of them, may have missed one along the way).

Basically I don't like anything with "magic". I know that lots of stuff in sci-fi and comic books is unrealistic, but at least they usually try to make some ground rules. Magic to me just seems so unpredictable that anything can happen and therefor I usually have no emotional investment in the characters.

I really enjoy shows with overarching plots, not just plots in individual episodes. Shows such as Lost, Venture Bros, Game of Thrones, The Wire, Sons of Anarchy (the first 3 seasons). The reason I was so engrossed with Lost was because it had a definite end, that they were leading towards from day one. No other show, to my knowledge, has had a SUCCESSFUL run at that. Terra Nova tried. Revolution is trying. Alcatraz is trying. None of those were really that good, though. Lost had its flaws for sure, but goddamn if it didn't keep me coming back for more.

My good friend dated a girl who was the beer wench at a Ren Faire. I'd go and spend the day learning how to juggle while drinking free beer. I don't know -- I like how unself-conscious it is. People are too f'n uptight. If you like it, and it ain't hurtin' anyone, do it. I'm also a fan of there is no such thing as guilty pleasures, just pleasures. If you like it, then don't be ashamed of it. We're not 16 anymore trying to fit in with the cool kids.

Anyway, I like things that are well-written. I can let a lot of things slide, and I've had this discussion with Pariah I think who is far more visual than I am, but I cannot abide bad writing. There's no excuse for it. Writers are cheap and plentiful. Hell, I can get past bad acting easier. And it's not just bad writing that gets me, but lazy writing. CSI just bothers the crap out of me. I don't know how those writers don't kill themselves (well, I do know - they buy jet skis).

I approach things like a writer. Just my point of view. I'll let good ideas poorly executed slide.

I'm with you there. Sometimes I'll watch a movie and they'll have this one line that's just lazy, predictable, cliche... and it just bothers me to the core. I just think, "One last rewrite, and this would have been fantastic." How those cheesy, predictable lines don't bother screenwriters, I don't know.

Have you ever even TRIED watching Game of Thrones? Even if you don't like fantasy, it's still a great show.

Plus, GOT is more of a political intrigue thriller, the second season also includes a good war aspect.

I should be more open minded I agree. It is critically acclaimed and loved but I just can't seem to broach it. Right now I'm rewatching Mad Men and Downton Abbey so I suppose I'm in a period mood.

I don't call myself a nerd but I really really really love movies in general. Hence me posting on this board %80 of the time. I'm not a TV guy unless I can watch it on Netflix. There isn't a show on tv that I watch on a weekly basis. If I had to pick something I'm a nerd on, it would be westerns and Hitchcock. I'm also a nerd in the fact that every opinion I have on something is clearly the right opinion and don't you dare say otherwise.

I don't really have one genre that I watch more than others. I do have some that for the most part, I don't like. Never liked horror movies of any kind except for vampire movies when I was in grade school. Not into any kind of fighting movies unless they have a half decent story like The Quest or In Hell. The only thing I ever enjoyed while watching slasher movies was half or fully naked women. Never understood the appeal of a conventional musical but I loved The Last Waltz, Concert For George and graphic musicals like The Wall.

I like action dramas like The Bourne Identities, Action Comedies like The Lethal Weapons. Don't care for Dummies Having Fun Flicks (The Fast & the Furious) or Sanctimonious Guy Saves the World Flicks (Steven Segal movies) except for the Asian ones.

Love crime movies, including ones about serial killers, drugs, crooked cops, Film Noir movies, Gangsters, Gangstas and more.

Will watch just about anything related to advertising or journalism because I've spent nearly forty years in one or the other.

Love War Movies.

Love gritty westerns.

Love a lot of comedies but don't care for a few very popular comedic actors.

Watch a lot of documentaries that most would consider political even though I hate the political system.

Never tire of watching historical documentaries regardless whether they're about a country, a state, a city, a government/monarchy, a crime, a war, an industry, a race, a religion, a sport, an animal, a type of music. Don't read as much as I used to so I try to cram a whole doc movie worth of knowledge in at a time.

ETA: I'm the nerd that thinks somebody cares about all of this.
