10 Gauge versus 12 Gauge Duck Hunting

I came across a decent deal on a Browning BPS 10 gauge yesterday and could not resist. Who has duck hunted with one? Is it worth it to use?

I had the same gun when younger, it's heavy as hell and will kick the shite out of you....it's been in the closet for close to 10 years

I was thinking it may be better if ducks are not working well for taking longer shots or mop up duty.

ive brought both with me before usually use 10 for geese

very few ever use them for ducks, largely due to heavier handling, stiff recoil, and difficulty in finding shells (and they cost more of course). That said, lots of guys swear by them for chasing high-flying snows. Been to many a camp in SW La rice that keep a 10 handy for when a body of snows happens to come over low "enough".

Drop down to a 3" and you get 12 gauge 3.5" performance with less recoil. Win.

Got that...just wanted a 10 I guess

Do they make 10gauge 3"?
If so, I've never seen them.
To the OP, I have the same gun and have been shooting it since 1998 or so. I like it alot. Like others said, it's heavy, but I don't find the recoil to be that bad.
I also don't duck hunt every weekend either.

I dont think there is a 3in...I thought he meant just shoot 3.5 out of 12 gauge

I have one. The are heavy as crap, but that's an odd benefit. Yes, it slows you down swinging and acquiring targets, but the weight greatly reduces recoil. The one I have is synthetic, and was given to me by Phil Robertson. Jason had one that was wood, and he shot it for a long time. Eventually he quit because the recoil was so bad on it.
The gun is more like a cannon. I've made absolutely ridiculous kills with it. If a duck is flying directly over your head, it consistently can kill at ranges that are crazy. I used mine because I was hunting in wide open fields at that time. If ducks lit wide, you could still kill them with the 10. The biggest benefit in that situation is that you had far fewer cripples. Generally, if you shot it with a 10, it was dead and you didn't have to chase it. But, I always brought both a 12 and a 10, so I wasn't confined to using the 10 all the time.
